I got a Craftsman Hammer Drill/Driver and because I rarely use a hammer drill (but if I need it, it sure would come in handy) I was wondering how the hammer drill would stack up against a 1/4" impact driver or a 1/2" impact driver.

This is what I got:

This is what I wonder I should get...since I don't have a compressor and it wouldn't be difficult to use adapters to go from 1/4" to 1/2" or a little harder but still possible to go from 1/2" to 1/4".

Personally I would get the smaller impact driver. You can buy adapters to use 1/4-1/2 sockets with it and then there is a myriad of driver/drill bit that you can use also. Depends mostly how you plan on using it though.

I believe the tools have very different uses. If you're just going to drill holes of various sizes, the drill will most likely be your best bet. I didn't know what the purpose of the small driver drill was until I watched a guy put together a garage door on my last project house. The driver set each screw to the proper torque and didn't twist them off or strip them out. On the other hand, it's very satisfying to use a high torque drill and big bit to drill a 1.25" holes through a 2x4. And a Hilti hammer drill will virtually make concrete melt.

you can buy drill bits that slip right into the hex on the impact driver. I've drilled 1 1/2" holes with mine no problem.
