Hello all, today I have a new problem with my 6.2 gmc K20. was running great now surging and missing at idle, and light throttle movements cause the engine to race. The truck died a few times but restarts ok and also It wont shut off right away, it takes like 3-4 seconds to shut down. changed both the water seperator and main filters last week. (it has the dual filter system off a 1982 model.) thanks for any advise.
 
I'm not familiar with a DB2 on these engines but have farm equipment with similar IP's. It sounds like either bad fuel or a bad IP. The not shutting off has me wondering what type of shut off it has. if it is mechanical it should be immediate.
 
Well I just replaced a leaking fuel inlet line from the frame to the lift pump, now it runs great but still has a hard time shutting down. It is a mechanical injection pump.
 
I knew the IP was mechanical but is the fuel shut off mech. as well?

Some older tractors had a Roosamaster IP, I think Stanadyne bought them out as they are identical. The fuel shut off was mech. and was immediate. There must be some wear in the FSO.
 
Ok, some history of the truck. bought the truck 3 weeks ago, it has been sitting for 7 years. It has a reman 6.2. I put new batteries in and it fired up on the second glow plug cycle and ran great. I drove it over to a fuel station and put in a double dose of power service in with a full tank. When I got home I found that the fuel tank was leaking fuel, rusted threw "ARGGGGGG I am the pirate of this ship, thou shall not leak arggg arggg arggg".
So I drained out that tank and removed it, then put the fuel into the other tank, low and behold it leaked tooo AAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGG. Removed that tank and bought one from a junk yard. finally I can keep fuel in the truck as long as the engine doesn't burn it.
Drove the truck for a couple of days then it died and wouldn't restart, that turned out to be a clogged "BOX" style pos fuel filter. Replaced the whole filter system as listed on a previous post. Now it has the wont shut of right away problem. It always starts fine in the morning and when hot and has good power with very little, I mean verry little black smoke if you rod the living crap out of it, sure sounds good with dual 2" straight pipe crack--crack--crack.
 
OK, I don't know about these shut offs but my combine has both, if I use the electric it takes a few seconds and the mech. is instant.
 
There is a possibility that the innards of your IP are all gummed up. Try taking the top off the IP, removing the fuel with a turkey baster or whatever and filling it with powerservice. Let that sit overnight then start it up. Once it starts drive it HARD.
 
Pink wire on IP is the shut off. Unplug it and see how fast the engine stops. This eliminates electrical issues.

You have a 1984 and they were known for the governor flex ring falling apart. Look for the tag on the IP to indicate it was rebuilt/repaired. I forget what the tag looked like etc. A different flex ring design was used to prevent this issue. Look for this when you pop the top of the IP.
 
The tag should be a big capital E which stands for EID. And the flex ring will disintegrate into little black pieces which look like coffee grounds.
