Getting back into the diesel truck game for a DD and occasional tow rig.
Not 100% set on the 6.5 but im leaning towards one for a few reasons
I've had 2 6.2s and 1 6.5TD suburban before that I molded for reliability.
Easy to work on and parts are dirt cheap.
12Vs didn't come in crew cabs
I like the OBS body style
They can be picked up for cheap.
Newer diesels can make great power but almost all models can have issues and they are stupidly expensive to fix if not caught.
Preaching to the choir on all of this but just thought I'd state it.

How the truck will be used. My DD and occasional tow rig.
I mostly work.from home but do have to drive from the Tacoma WA area to northern Idaho or southern OR for work occasionally. So I can go a few weeks with just running errands and then spend a fee days with a few thousand miles inbetween. Towing would be mostly to tow our 68 4bt powered bronco to the trails. 6k max there with rig and trailer. May buy a boat this year so towing would be 10k max after that but I don't think I'll get that large of a boat.

My mods will be as follows at first.
All reliability mods
Upgraded lift pump and harness
Upgraded fuel filter assembly
Oil cooler lines
Battery/starter cables
PmD relocation to bumper
Fluidampr

Other first mods
Upgraded DP and Exhaust
Upgraded air intake it the one I buy doesn't have the K47

Turbo options have changed a bit since I had my 6.5 so here I'd need the help.

Power goals would be around 500tq at the motor. Maybe a bit more.

With my use and goals I'm thinking a HX40 but would like to hear what the group has to say.

Tires would be 33" max for the time. I my lift down the lines but with our crawler bronco and my 92 land cruiser on 40's I already have some lifted trucks around.
If I get a manual I may consider mechanical pump to run zero computers.
Basically I want the truck to be as reliable and efficient for long highway hauls and occasional tows.

Anyone got another turbo suggestion or some reliability mods I forgot?

Cooling system upgrades is always a smart move on the 6.5.
Balanced flow water pump and AK Diesel Driver’s electro viscose fan clutch.
New coated radiator from TSP

Fuel pressure gauge tapped at the ip inlet.
That lift pump and filter- the Fass as a package unit is nice if you can swing it. Then carry 3/8 line all the way to the ip.

If you going inside the engine - there is some stuff to do.
Have you priced 6.5 recently? Way more than they used to be a few years back.

Just how much of your money do we get to spend? Haha

Sorry yes I knew I was forgetting something. On my last suburban 95. I upgraded to the later 130gpm water pump and good fan clutch with duramax fan. Temp never rose at all towing my brothers 10k (boat and trailer) around numerous times.
