Getrag 290 Transmission Help

Nick94 is looking for some help with this transmission. Anyone with any info, please feel free to chime in. Thanks.

From what I could find, the GETRAG 290 is a 5 speed trans that was the predecessor of the NV3500. If so it is an alright trans, but definately not a HD unit.
 
Gm guy (IIRC) here on TTS in another thread described tham as 'bulletproof' I've not owned one so, couldn't tell you from personal experience...
 
From what I can tell the two are the same thing. They are all aluminum case'd with a fixed bell housing. They come out of the vehicle in one piece like an automatic trans.
