Hi all my name is Dave and I'm from Australia. First of all let me say that this is one of the best forum sites I've come across. My current ride is a 1990 Toyota Landcruiser Hzj 80. I've swapped a 6.5 na into it along with a Turbo 700r4 auto. So far no real dramas apart from cracking the original '94 block from the water jacket to lifter valley when the electric fans failed last December. Have recently rebuilt it using a '99 turbo spec block and have added a few aftermarket bits to it. I have installed the DSG gear drive to replace the cam chain and a Fluidampr balancer, apart from that the motor is stock, worn out db2 pump and injectors included. I currently get about 18-18.5 mpg running 315/75r16 Toyo M/Ts , have gotten 19-19.5 mpg on 31x10.5 r15. Future plans are to supercharge the motor using a Harrop/Eaton HTV1900 putting out around 8-12 psi. Not looking for big numbers just after a bit extra over N/A with reliability. Here are some pics of my truck and thanks for the add. Cheers Dave

Welcome to The Truck Stop, Dave. Interesting set up you have.

Great to have someone from across the water on here.

Looks like original Toyota filters? does the alt have power steering or vac pump built in?

Dave that is some good building there. I love the twin snorkels. Also the radiator cap built into the thermostat housing is a genius move -eliminates the air that gets trapped in the cooling system at the cap where it belongs. I hate the bleeder screws.

The electric fans letting you down doesn't surprise me however, many people have had that as a result from only electric fans cooling these engines. Have you tried fitting a mechanical driven fan? When you add the boost it will raise your btu output and require more cooling than you need under natural aspiration. Are you using the spin on style water pump?

Please do share when you make the upgrades.

Hi all thanks for the replies. I have had previously a 6.2 in a Toyota FJ 60 and that was my first dealing with these motors some 10 plus years ago. I ran twin Toyota air filters on that one as well. I found that it breathes way better by at least 50-100 rpm. The twin snorkels are made from 3" exhaust tubing. I run twin 2.5" exhaust out of the motor into a single 3" with a straight through muffler. I found that the belt driven Chev vac pump is not strong enough for the Japanese brake system, so on my 6.2 I used a Toyota alternator with a vac pump mounted to it. On this motor I found that a TD5 Landrover 110 amp works well. The thermostat housing is from a Toyota 2h diesel and I had the cap spout welded onto it. I bought the motor with the factory 5 blade steel fan but I had to make a cowling for my custom built alloy radiator so tried the electrics as a shortcut. Ended up making a fiberglass cowling and it works a treat. Motor sits around 75-80 degrees C all day . Currently still have the older style bolt on water pump. Will up grade it to the later h/o pump when I charge it. Will also have to change over to the dual thermostat housing at the same time due to clearance issue on the supercharger drive snout.

Cool. Some more pics of engine bay would be nice. I think I see some things on there that we do differently here, like is that the fuel filter in center back firewall?

Welcome!

Because there is a lot of "recent" new info on better turbochargers for the 6.5 I suggest looking into "better" turbo's that we have extensively covered on here rather than a power sucking belt driven supercharger. 5 years ago it was all use the asthma attack GMX with a turbomaster. We have proven otherwise. Now you have several turbo's to choose from the A Team Turbo, HX40II, HX35 hybrids, etc, including using a large turbo with a BD spool valve and/or high stall converter. Pick your turbo size for your use - High RPM full power towing to off the line quick spool small turbo's that die in the upper RPM's. The turbo's deliver better MPG than a belt driven supercharger. Sure the supercharger is a completely different animal than a turbo for response etc.

Is this a "VAN" engine with the different heads or a regular "pickup" engine?

One last thing to check is the Supercharger you pick - make sure it's still supported as they discontinued at least one model. That is parts are no longer available for when it needs a rebuild. I have seen some of these worn out scrap metal units advertized used.

MarinedieselUSA.com closed down.
Whipple Discontinued.

With 5x the cost of a turbo $5390.00
http://www.bulletcars.com/superchargers/chevrolet/chev-6.5-litre-diesel-supercharger-system.html

And gives you a weak 8 PSI of boost. I would crank it up for more boost 12-18 PSI to use all the fuel the pump can put out.

Check out turbovanman's 'Diesel Get away van' with the remote mount turbo.

Look forward to the build.

Howdy all. Here are some pictures of my 6.5 in my Toyota. WW I'm not sure what the differences are between the 'Van' and the 'Pickup' motor is apart from the different angle on the heads. I've put new heads on as the old ones were worn out in the valve guides and had been sleeved before. The old heads had the square pre-cups. As for the new heads I don't recall. They were new from Peninsular. The bloke who ordered them had a turbo set up but these didn't fit his intake so its possible that these heads have the turbo spec pre-cups in them.

Found a few pics of when I did the rebuild at the beginning of the year plus one of the old block and the reason why. Also found a picture of my 6.2 from 9 yrs ago.

Good pic's. Are you running veggie oil?

On a side note and only mentioning because I am shocked, but I sent some injectors and another item to Australia 6 days ago and the guy has the stuff today!!

Leroy I'm running normal pump diesel.Bio/veggie oil is almost un-heard of here in North Queensland and if you can find some its mostly individuals doing it in their back yards. I know what you mean in regards to shipping as well. I got the starter for this motor from New York state for half the price including shipping costs landed on my doorstep in 10 days. The local auto electrician was going to charge me 400 + and I had to wait 4-6 weeks.
