Engine hours

It doesn't display it as one of the settings, but if you hold the trip button down and turn the key to run, it goes through the cluster check and, if I remember right, it displays the hours as part of that check.

FWIW, on the non DIC GMs, it was hold in the trip button for 5 sec with everything off. Been that way since they put in a digital ODO (around '97).

It took me a couple weeks after I bought my '04 Cummins to figure this out. With the truck off, turn the key to the "RUN" position, make sure your odometer is showing your overall miles. Hold the "Trip" button down. It will switch over to the Trip miles, but it won't clear it out. Keep holding down the Trip button and after about 5-6 seconds, you will see the numbers of engine hours showing where the miles would be shown.

Thanks!! Ill try that!!! I bought my truck from a fire fighter and want to see if what he said was true(he said it sat and idled ALOT)..he put less than 18,000 miles on it in 2.5 years that he owned it and he made several trips to Kansas he said!!!

That's real good for you. 124k divided by 3047 is just a bit over 40 mph average. That's basically highway miles and little idling. For example, If you look at my miles/hrs it's around 43 mph average. I do not do any idling to speak of and am 95% highway driving.

Mine has idled a shit load!!! 80,000 miles and 2880 hours. Averages out to 27.77 mph. It was that low of a mph when I bought it a year ago. I didn't help that number go up much either. Sitting around all winter on the pipeline, the truck ran all the time... From the time I left the house til I got back home 14-18 hours later most days. Both you guys are well ahead of me.

Of course now, since it's a Cummins, you can fire it up on Jan 2nd and shut it down on April 1st to change the oil and there won't be any wear to speak of...;)

Actually, I'm probably about 1/2 right...):h

Its amazing how these motors run...When I bought and changed the oil it was clean, ran it 4000miles and changed again and still as clean as when I put it in almost... my 6.5's make the oild dirty as soon as its started....now ive ran about 1000 miles on this oil and its STILL clean!!!!and doesnt use any oil!! my 6.5 use a little oil and dont smoke like the cummins does!! and the cummins still gets better fuel mileage!!!

Man, I can drain my oil, flush the motor with 3 gals of clean oil, dump that and put in the good stuff and as soon as I start it, it's black as coal.

hmmmm, wonder why?? mines not like 100% clean, but its not coal black....Wish my pulling tractors(lawn tractor style) would run this clean...THey are HORRIBLE on oil...they darken it up or contaminate it with fuel super quick, and dont have 1/3 of the hours my truck does!!! wish Cummins made a lawn tractor engine!! hhehe that would be an instant hit!!

By law the hours do not have to be accurate like the odometer does. GM's have a habit of resetting to zero with a low voltage condition like jumping dead batteries etc. Not saying Dodge does or doesn't - but keep in mind that it may not be accurate.
