i put electric fan on my 6.2 (86 3/4 ton with lift and plow) it hardly ever kicks on bought a thermostat kit off eBay 25$ got fan off Chrysler minivan in junk yard seems to rev quicker and I have seen no down side to mod, also did this mod to my 82 with 6.5 turbo seemed to be cats meow, curious any down side any of you done this with 6.5/6.2? Seems to warm quicker and I would think more hp cause of fan being removed.
 
The OBS (80's) had more airflow than the 90's and could get away with less cooling. When you step out of the freezer electric fans are not recommended for IDI's as they simply can't flow enough air with the space and alternator constraints. Going to a 9 blade 21" fan is nearly a required mod. It's possible the new Ram diesel electric fans may do ok, but, they already are running hot towing. The electric fan choice has GM $hitty cooling design written all over it.

On a scientific note electric fans peak at 5000 CFM without restrictions like radiators. I measured a 21" Trailblazer fan at 10,000 CFM with the hood closed. I used the fan on my 1993 and it didn't have enough CFM to keep it cool - not enough blade pitch. So the 6.5 TD requires way more than 10,000 CFM to stay cool. (Then we turn on the AC!) Conclusion is 2 electric fans will not keep you cool when you need max cooling. So going electric is reducing cooling performance. You may not need all the cooling performance depending on your use and outside temps.

Other things reduce cooling load like a better turbo and better exhaust to let heat out of the engine.

Some plow truck operators have had to mod their fan clutches due to the airflow changes the plow caused on the freeway while going to the next job.
 
I guess old body style and living in the great 49th state factors into my pattern, it's alway cold and both of my converts have been doing well, both don't work hard though, have a 97 crew cab I was thinking about but it is a work horse I guess I won't be converting it.
 
Man I miss my old GMC Jimmy 4x4 3/4 ton w/6.2 diesel which I operated in the tropic and sub-tropics never ever had cooling issues even pulling 30' travel trailer.

As other cooling mods go EVANS waterless coolant while pricey eliminates cavitation and allows running the diesel at zero cap pressure so only pressure on system is pump head pressure lost as it exits block. I use this coolant with much success.

It is possible, just not by the typical manner. An electric fan clutch is definitely workable although it is expensive; ditto for a Hummer hydraulic fan clutch. If air conditioning is part of the equation, consider fabbing-in pusher fans in front versus using just the engine driven fan.
