in my 95 with reman engine and ip, new injectors and gp im getting a code 96, which i checked with on http://www.dieselspecialists.net/simplemachine/index.php?topic=313.0, and i was wondering if they are right, they say
96 CYLENDER #4 BALANCE SYSTEM, the reason im wondering is because one, on another site i saw someone say 94 was cylinder 4, two, the spelling, and three its the biggest pain in the ass to get to, is it not uncommon to have cylinder codes like this when first starting an engine? it has brand new diesel in it as well, i drained the old stuff out yesterday

it would seem like it would be 6, but maybe that would be too easy to make them match like that, i don't know, thats the only list i can find

im not sure whats causing it, i cleared codes and it came back. i pulled gp's in both cylinders and they are fine, the engine doesn't knock or make any weird noise. just blows smoke, only run for about 10-15 min total, have to get it timed, but the diesel shop said i need to drive it at least 500 miles before they will touch it, i hope its not compression related, its a $3000 reman thats barely even run for very long, i just don't want to run it after my last engine, 3 gps through pistons and besides im in idaho and the engine came from new york, thats a helluva distance for warranty, plus pulling that cock sucker again

Advanced timing can cause excessive smoke and others have mentioned it takes time to purge all air out of the fuel injection system.

I'd time it right away. There's some cheap software available if you already have a laptop. Or did you go mechanical IIRC you were talking about that.

DTC96 is cylinder #6 - if that DTC96 persists, pull that injector, swap it with #1 - if still DTC96, something wrong with cylinder #6 - if now DTC91, gotta bad injector

And gopher GmtdScan Tech - gives you better input for us to help you...............

well i went and drove it about a mile, then bled the fuel canister and there was some air that worked its way up, i cleared the codes and drove it about 10 more miles and the code has not come back, so im hoping it will stay that way, running good, i can tell i still need to time it but it already seems to have more power than when i bought it

The cyl ballance fault codes are 91 (cyl 1) through 98 (Cyl 8) and the numbers corespond to the cyl
96 is cyl #6

Air in the system will cause all sorts of crap to happen.

If you dont see a return of the code, your probably good to go.

The scan software is a sweet deal for sure.
