Changing Duramax Fuel Filter

Fuel Filter

Nice. Do you have any photos of the engine compartment to share? There are also a few other options that you can do today, that were not available back when this was written. There is an adapter with a spin on filter that you can get that makes things easy. It eliminates the OEM filter altogether.

Can you tell me what this adapter is? Is it better or what does it do that the original fuel filter does not do? I will take some pics of the adapter I made and post them.

Maybe because I'm tall and big, but the last time I did the fuel filter I didn't even need to remove the battery or anything. I remember putting the filter on as tight as I could and I twisted it right off with my hands (it didn't leak, either) after disconnecting the WIF wiring, and the new reduced diameter Wix went on even easier, and will come right off in the future (again, doesn't leak), and you can even fit a filter wrench on it. I just used a bit of diesel on the o-rings. Just my $.02.

What year are you talking about? My 2007, you can't get it up through the top, no way. What is the new reduced size Wix? Something different, or new? Thanks for the ideas.

Morganhorse -What model truck do you have? Is it a LBZ or an LMM?
This adapter eliminates the OEM filter and allows you to replace the filter with a more traditional "spin-on" type. It makes maintenance much easier. I should have photos in my garage to see. You can also get a "pre-filter" that mounts in the back of the truck under the bed, and have double filtration! I love filters. ;)

My Silverado is an LTZ. Since changing the filter and adding the bracket, it runs like a scared rabbit. So, must have had a bunch of "gunk" in it. I don't know how some of you could have gotten that filter out the top the way it was wedged in there. Talked to someone on the phone this AM and they said the design was done for dealers so us who own and drive can't do it and it costs more to have a dealer do it this way. Whatever, but it will be easier now for me. I am not sure the bottom "water removal" valve is working on mine, I need to check this out.

It takes me 10 minutes at most to change my fuel filter from the top. Only thing different from the factory is the "tweaked" AC line and a couple of short spacers behind the filter head mount. All I have to remove is the intake hose. It was the same on my LLY.
I have a good pivoting handle filter wrench and a WIF sensor wrench I got from Greg (Lubrication Specialist).

yep, 2007.5 (new body style) I was stranded in some town in Nebraska in the dead of winter and tried my best....hours later, frustrated cold, cursing chevy designers, I finally got it changed and down the road I went. That is when I started to think about how to design a better system and bought the parts and built the riser for the Fuel Filter. With this new system, I can change it in less than 5 minutes. Hurrah!

Sounds good. Why not post up some pictures (and maybe an explanation) so the other guys can get a look.

It's just the wix fuel filter for the Duramax. O'Reilly's will have it. ;)

Well, being the frugal guy that I am I had to change my Fuel Filter this morning. The dash indicator said 10% left but, it has been in there for 14K mi and I was losing power. Will go to the normal every 10K mi like most others are doing since I have bumped the motor up a bit.

Anyway I took pictures and will share. Yep that's the filter. I keep one in the truck as it was said you never know when you will get bad fuel and stranded in the middle of BFE without anything.

I did my change from the top and I just got one ouchy that lost a couple of ml's of blood. Oh, did I say that this was the first time I have replaced the FF on my truck.

The only thing I removed was the air intake tube between the air filter housing an the plastic inlet plenum.

I did think there wasn't enough room on the back side of the filter up next to the engine so I installed a couple of washers that were about 5/32" thick to space out the filter housing. I think there is enough thread engagement that I didn't need longer bolts.

I didn't have a proper size filter wrench out of the five that I had but I ran down to the auto parts place and got a $6 filter strap wrench.

And yes I bought the filter wrench with all the Bling. I looks good but is a tight fit

After removing the wiring on the bottom side of the filter for the water sensor I fit the strap wrench on the filter and loosened the filter to remove

Before I removed the filter I slipped a one gallon plastic baggy over the filter to catch any fuel. Didn't really need it. After removing the filter I was able to get it out the top without distorting anything. I did need to rotate a clamp on one of the fuel lines coming off the filter housing from the 3 o'clock to the 12 o'clock position and then it came right out.

Putting on the new filter I removed the water sensor from the old filter. Be careful as if you didn't get the old filter completely drained there is fuel in there that will go all over the place. How do I know:eek:. I used dielectric grease to lube the orings and them reinstalled to manufacturers specs. I didn't put any fuel in the filter like was recommended and it took 20-23 pumps on the priming pump to get fuel out the vent. I didn't wait for it to come gushing out before I closed it. I did have actual flow beyound the bubbles I started getting around pump 18.

So this is what i will be keeping in the truck incase I have a fuel filter emergency.

I want to thank all you guys especially RICS for starting this thread and all the contributors. You guys made it easy for me:D

On this new one, I'm not sure if top side is even possible.

If I had an LML I think I would get that trap door thingy for the inner fender well and make the appropriate special tools similar to what PhillBilly2 did and then I would be ready for anything.
