Auto trans that was bolted to a 6.2 700r4?

I am looking at buying a auto trans, maybe a 700r4, that was bolted to a 6.2. This was in a 1971 suburban 2wd. The owner sold the diesel and wants the trans gone. He says that it had a switch on the dash to have it go into OD. He thinks it was from the 80's.

He states its a 700r4. If so, does the 700r4 hold up to the torque of the 6.2? I haven't looked at the trans yet. Too cold for humans outside, 5*.
When did the 4l60 come out in the diesel trucks.

Thanks for the info and advise.

The naturally aspirated 6.2 in half ton trucks(the ones GM built to improve there overall CAFE rating)came with the 700R4/4L60 trans. The 4L60 trans is just the modern name for the 700R4. They did OK, but not the greatest if you worked them. The 6.2's in 2500/3500 trucks mostly came with the turbo 400, and starting in 91 most came with the 4L80E trans. Up until 93 I think you could still get a 6.2 in a 1500 truck with a 4L60 trans.

That is my understanding well that 93 was the last year with 1500 and a na 6.2. I believe the trans was still called a 700r4. I am certain 91 and back would be 700r4 which is essentially a 4l60. In 94-95 they made a Na 6.5 with the 4l60e trans. By 88 or 89 most of the bugs had been worked out and they were a solid trans for light duty work. I believe all the trans shops try to stick to 88-89 and up cores. The early ones were not so good.

Starting around 89 or so GM changed teh name of the 700R4 to the 4L60 trans, and then in 93 they switched to the 4L60E. Some 93 trucks got the 4L60 trans still as GM liked to throw curve balls at yeah juts for the heck of it. Never seen or heard of a 6.5 with a 4L60E trans.

My understanding is GM did not change the nomenclature of the 700r4 until 91 but it really does not matter as they are essentially one and the same.

The Na ds4 6.5s are rare and they came with 4l60e in the 1500s. Pretty certain they only made them in 94 & 95. Gary is one such critter and I think Drago has one of these ex vdot 1500s as well with Na 6.5.

Weasel, couple things, the switch you speak of, likely this is to command the torque converter clutch for lockup. 4th gear comes along with road speed and throttle position. This brings another thought, (you may already know) the throttle valve cable (TV) must be operational and adjusted properly.

They did quite a few N/A 6.5's in vans up to 95 with the old DB2 mechanical pump. Also there was some 6.5N/A DS4 pump trucks. GM likes throwing curve balls out there at us.

The fellow said the trans was from an 1987, code 7ykm. I want to run the trans on a 305 ci chevy gas engine and it my not be a good one to get into. After all all used trans work with no problems. he stated 40k for miles. Who knows whats true.
Thanks to all that provided help and information.

Another thought. Diesel 700 behind a small gasser, governor. It controls shift points in combination with aformentioned TV. You will experience early shifts with no tinkering. This won't really 'hurt' anything provided the tv is hooked up. It'll be a little more sluggish on accel.

700R4 is a good trans if built correctly and can take anything a 305/350 or diesel can put thru it. Its better than a 350/400 as it has overdrive and lockup, which is great if you have really high rear gears.

That date code is a 1987 700R4 and as noted, you will need to source up the correct TV cable and throttle linkage. Due to old and crappy TPS setups, my LU is a switch on the dash, much better for towing, in town use etc as I control when it locks up, useful if you have really low gears and or tall tires.

The rear end ratio I believe is 3:73, ford explorer disc rear. I may have to change the gearing if it doesn't work out. I don't mind the switch to do LU, but how is the shift points and torque converter for a gasser. This fellow wants $150 for the trans and it has the TC and TV cable. I am not building a hot rod with HP, just a resto-rod with gas saving in mind. The old GM cars are wood frame and torque doesn't do them favors. The price is good for claiming it doesn't need a rebuild.

Thanks for all replys

3.73 will work just fine with a reasonable tire dia. Diesel TC's are 'tighter' lower stall so this will help some in the mpg dept. High overlap camshafts will not like a tc like this. Governors are tunable and/or swappable to tailor shifts. Excellent cruiser and mild perf trans. You can buy lots of durability related aftermarket hard parts if one wishes to crank up the power.
