Air temp sensor

Hey guys, I was wondering if someone can tell me where the sensor for the outside air temperature is located on the c/k trucks and suburbans. Ive been looking for the mirror assembly and harnesses at the junkyard with little luck. If I find one at least I know where to start. Thanks

I've never seen a C/K truck with one, would be interested if it was an option.
 
Nothing about it in the 95 and 97 GM manuals. Any idea what years it was available? Where does it display?
 
If equiped it would be up in front of radiator on the support by the horn. Only seen them on 99- up, but installed one on my truck. Temp/compass out of a 2000ish truck
 
Oh yea, the stock connection in the back of our mirrors are the same as 99-up, but you need to add 2 wires in the empty slots.
 
I could have sworn it was an option on the later years of the gmt400 platform. More so in suburbans/tahoes. I was under the impression that the temp display would be in the mirror, but now that im thinking about it, it may have been in the overhead console with the DIC display. Leroy, i think you are right about the location near the horn. Looks like ive got to do a little more research here...thanks

Yeah. They mount up by the horns where the center support runs up the center of the grill from the lower rad. support to the upper rad. support. I just had a 99 suburban in and it had it. So I looked at my truck and it looks like the wiring is at the mirror, but I couldn't find the connector out by where the temp sender goes. I was hoping GM used the same wire harness, just put in a different mirror. But doesn't appear to be the case.
 
The temperature would have been located in the mirror, these trucks were never offered with a DIC in the overhead console. The wiring (from what I understand) would have been integrated with the dash wiring loom and if the truck wasn't equipped with it originally, chances are the wiring isn't there on it. I was hoping that my 99 was pre-wired for all these things, but it's not. When I was installing my cablights, I expected there to be a connector in the convenience center like my 88 had, but after it not being there and having to figure out where the cablights plugged in at on these trucks, I found that there is a connector up behind the steering column that contained the cablights, and all associated wiring for the compass/temp mirror. The plug isn't even there on my truck. I also noticed that most of the unused slots on my conventions center don't have electrical connections in them either.

Thats what I was saying , same deal on mine. If you want the temp/comp mirror get one from the junk yard and cut the connector off with it. Then you can depin two wires and add them to yours regular compass mirror. One will go out to sensor and the other I cannot remember, I think its a ground. David do you know?
Also get the sensor/connector at the junk yard.
I experimented with mine, I was going to use the temp display to read my veg oil temp also, but seem to remember having problems like it only reads up to 99* or something like that. Anyway it would'int work for me as a veg oil temp read out.
 
They missing two wires are both for the sensor.

This might help in the quest to use a mirror temp sensor, it's just varying oms. Might be able to find a sensor with a wider band, or possibly it's part of the mirrors limitations?!

So first off, thanks for all the info. This forum never fails to amaze me with the amount of helpful information. Where exactly did you find a connector for the cablights/mirror? Floating under the dash or did you have to pull the column covers to access it? I would have to guess that my truck being a 96' base model, probably does not have any wiring for the mirror or anything else that would be considered an option.

And where exactally do you find the plug diagrams such as above? I could think of alot of times when I could have used that somewhere else. Thanks!

Well, my truck didn't have the plug for the mirror/cablights, so it doubtful your truck would have it. If it did, it's a blue plug located on the inner firewall, above the steering column (basically behind the IP cluster).

I have a subscription to alldatadiy.com for the truck, which is where I get the diagrams. They are the same diagrams as a factory service manual has.
