Hi and Welcome to our forum! :welcome2:

You don't have to put a water separator filter first. You have a lot of different options. What type of filter setup do you have in mind?

I run 2 different filters, and I have done away with the OEM filter setup. I run a tall can CAT HE filter in the rear, and a short can CAT HE filter up front.

Secondary fuel filter and thanks for getting back with me so soon.

I have the racor filter that is a 4 micron/water separator now and will likely keep since it seems to do a great job (little pricey, if you have a suggestion for as good or better and cheaper let me know) and new filter head comes with a large capacity filter with a 2 micron.

Thanks
Jim

Installed NEW additional fuel filter under the bed of the truck. Had a problem not able to keep truck started as it would start then depleted the fuel in the line and in new filter and run out of fuel. Seemed logical I was having a air leak from the cp3 not able to replenish fuel in filter(s). Waited a day, went back at it and the quick connect in front of the fuel tank shield dislodged (?). Connect, said a PRAYER, started truck and all is good. Thanked the lord for patience and persistence and now happy camper. Special thanks to Jeff for input.

Jim: Glad to hear and see that you made out OK with adding a new pre-filter.

Any photos of your filter set up to add to this thread? Did you go with the CAT HE 2 micron spin-on fuel filter? Or the Donaldson filter?

Jeff,

Went with the Donaldson as it came with the BD Remote Fuel Filter setup (Ebay for $89.65). Pending on which is easier to purchase I could also go with the Cat 1R-0749 as we have a Cat dealership on the way to my moms about 50 miles away. They seem to do the same job. I should be getting my Racor filter Tuesday to install, also Allison transmission external filter too also change out. Oil change by end of year also. If it ever stops raining I will see about getting the pictures taken, loaded, & sent.

Those Donaldson's are very good filters too! They have excellent filter media inside. Now fill out that Sig line and put all the info about your truck in there! ;) :D

Ok, problem. Replaced OEM filter (Racor) and now I have a fuel leak after driving around for 150 miles after putting in a secondary BD remote filter under the truck. Still able to drive around so I am not losing prime so I am thinking in may be a return line. Any ideas to locate this problem would be helpful or else where to look. Looking under the truck and fuel lines flow and return they do look good do not see any rust, same with cooler. Jim

Where is the fuel leak coming from? The OEM filter location, or the new secondary location? I would double check the tightness of all of the filters and the hose clamps. And check the hose barbs. Did you use teflon tape on the threads of the hose barbs inside the filter head? Also be sure to make sure that you did not replace the OEM and forget to get out the old rubber o-ring type gasket from the old filter. Sometimes they get stuck inside the OEM filter head. The double gasket on the OEM is unfortunately a common problem for first time replacement.

Leak is not coming from the OEM filter, it is coming in the location of the added filter under the truck behind the driver door. I have been under looking and I can not see anything dripping, yet there is full on the ground. Checked all the fittings and no sign of leaks. Also I drove around for a week and there were no leaks before change OEM filter yesterday and noticed fuel gauge slowly going down more than normal and noticed the ground afterwards, that is where I am having a problem understanding the situation. Weird.
