99 FORD F350 CREW CAB 4X4 DUALLY What are the known issues for these trucks?

I am thinking about possibly buying a Ford. Some of my favorite vehicles were Fords. A Mach I, Torino Elite, 89 Conversion van, 63 F150, 67 F150.

I haven't had Ford's since 95.

I am looking at a 99 FORD F350 CREW CAB 4X4 DUALLY and some similar vehicles.
Crew cab diesel with a manual transmission - no rust.

I'm not real particular if it's a GM, Dodge or Ford. But the old 6.5's are the only trucks I know anything about,

What are the known issues for these trucks?

What kind of fuel milage do they get?
 
The fact that your getting a manual trans is great news on its own. Thats a ZF-6. Almost completely the same as the ZF-6 used in the DMAX trucks. Only difference is GM made a slight modification to the trans involving machining a certain part that makes the trans shift a little smoother, Ford did not. There really isn't going to be a whole lot to go wrong here. Short of the Crank Position Sensor. They are known to be failure prown on the 7.3L. Do yourself a favor and if you do buy the truck, keep a spare with you just in case.

Also, Ford used whats known as an HEUI(Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injection) system on there 7.3L and 6.0L before going to common rail on the 6.4L. This system uses oil drawn from the crankcase that is pressurized to about 2500PSI(an ok system will have this pressure, a good system can make up to 2900PSI) to act as a "plunger" on the injectors. When a command is issued from the IDM(injector Driver Module), the plunger in the injector is fired, injecting the fuel into the cylinder. Its a bit of an overly complicated system, but it works well. Don't let your oil go for anything more than 5000 miles before changing the oil and filter. 3000 would actually be better. Reason being that the oil gets sheared when under that amount of pressure. As it starts to degrade, it can lead to increased wear and tear on the pump, and the inside of your engine.

When was the last time the clutch was changed? How many miles? I've seen several of these trucks that have 200K and up on them and they all run like champions.
 
Those 7.3 DI injectors are EXPENSIVE....I have a 94.5 (1st year of the "Powerstroke") and injectors are $300 a pop and then some shop charges me $90 hr to install them....I was only able to do 2 or 3 at a time.

Also I have an oil leak on this truck that I can't seem to pinpoint, after I paid to change vavle cover gaskets, oil pan gasket, and whatever other gaskets there seem to be.....Now someone told me it's comming from the turbo....It's a great truck, pulls like a monster but I can't seem to work the bugs out....And don't get me started on the 5 speed ZF tranny, I rebuilt it and it still gives me trouble, someone else told me that those tranny's can't be rebuilt because they never come out right, BOY, was he correct!
