While we are on the scan tool subject, I need to get one, what would be the best way to go for setting timing on the newer 6.5 at this point have not set my timing accurately just kind of by ear/ seat of pants

Carcode, it isn't the most user friendly but there is a tutorial on here how to do it. It is also good for the "Can" ecm's

Just for having another choice, there is also a "Auto Ingenuity" diagnostic tool......Never used it but heard it's for OBDII.
