635 Rebuild cont.

Don't use green Loctite unless you plan to NEVER remove the fitting without a torch to heat it up. There are anaerobic thread sealers made for the job.

What would you recommend?

I use it because of the location, removing the lines, it's no fun if the whole shebang starts threading out..

Maybe a blue loctite (242 IIRC)?

I'd recommend their (Loctite brand) hydraulic sealant but in a pinch 242 (or blue equivalent) would be better than the green RC609.

Like this.

Funny. I got a 10oz bottle of the red at a garage sale in CO about 10+ years ago and still have half a bottle. Half because I spilt a bit one time. I use that crap on everything. Like Franks red hot sauce.

Thanks Mike, I'll find some when I get home.
I need two lines at least 12' long to reach from the transmission to the bed location I'm planning on using to mount the filters. The kit has two lines long enough to make the engine oil runs but the remaining two lines total 14' so neither is long enough. Greg at Lubrication Specialists has offered to have a set made up once I'm sure of the lengths (and fitting sizes now) and as he's also a site sponsor, I'll go with his offer. I'll purchase the fittings from a local shop and stimulate the economy there (they don't do braided hoses).
I will cut the cooler inlet line at the transmission to remove that 90* bend and re-use the fitting after flaring the line. I'll attache that line to the filter's inlet with the correct 1/4NPT to Dash-? in-line fitting. A 90* elbow fitting inserted into the transmission will connect the filter's output to transmission's in-let port.

Still need to sort out the 4x4 circuitry first but it will all have to wait on getting home Friday.

So is the truck done or not???? Is the engine broke n? Glad to see you still improving on GM engeneering Paul!!!! Hope you get to Bragg soon,!

No, the truck isn't done yet. Looks like my personal prediction (previously held to myself) that you'd be up and running before the new motor was provied to be true. I wouldn't have it any other way. Very pleased to see you back up and communicating again.

As for my "still improving GM engineering" that's high praise but, totally undeserved. Yeah, I'm trying to have a top notch motor put together and there's a bit of inovation going on in the process but I'm mainly volunteering the truck as a 'lab rat' for proof of concept.

I trust Bill Heath, it may be taking time but there's been some supply and service issues outside his control that are getting straightened out so the latest word I got is that work has started again and the pistons did not require modification after all. Good news all the way around.

BILL!!!! SO glad to see you back up and around and on the forum again!!! Maybe this summer you can make it out here to Huskerland and we can go fishing for some walleye or Northern Pike or large mouth or wipers or blue cat or channel cat or crappie! We have over a dozen lakes that are either State Lakes, State Recreation Areas or State Parks all with various levels of camping areas around Lincoln. Of course, you're welcome to park out front and plug in to my house, too!

Ahem....

Motor is progressing nicely. I should have it post Christmas when Ted plays Santa hauling my motor down here with his Green Sleigh pulled by 8 'tiny' [6.2 pistons]. My son will be home on leave so Ted is graciously refusing to take away that time with the temptation to drop in the new unit earlier. Sucks that my son isn't into wrench turning....

Right now the word is that we are waiting on...you guessed it...a cam (he has high demand, low return rates on cores, and yet another one of 'mine' went out the door ["it never ends"]). Life.
We are also waiting on Bosch (HO injectors), Stanadyne's new designed IP and Fluid Dampener to deliver as they have been slow of late. At least I have back up plans A, B & C for the Fluid Dampener and the Super Cool waterpump/clutch/fan kits are in stock. I have an excel spreadsheet that will total the prices for this build but I'm scared to fill it in and have the wife see it.

Hopefully I'm not getting out of line here Paul.

A happy Husband is "A Happy World"....Knowing it's a women's prerogative to change her mind and if its any consolation to you, I was once told by your very thoughtful wife that she didn't mind that you have your Truck as your hobby..

Thanks Paul, She doesn't mind the hobby part, nor the expenses really it's just when the expenses don't add up to enjoyment and that's pretty much what's happening here. Lots of time and energy spent without a visible result other than shiny stuff generates angst on my partr and thats what she sees. But, there's no real secrets as to what I'm buying, just the actual total is a bit of a stunner. Nothing compared to the total B.O.A.T. this thing has been since it was first birthed by Ted and Jamie. For want of a $16 set of bearings, litterally thousands have been dumped into this motor. It sure has become the "Ultimate" build. Ultimate what remains to be seen.
Purchased a new oil pump and pickup screen for it as the old one was found to be full of filings from the bearing's failure and crank getting cut down.:rocketwhore:

Country song indeed.:hihi:

You'll have an awesome truck when it's all said and done Paul. Besides, everyone is still enjoying the build thread.

The build thread is certainly more entertaining than half of what's on TV anymore!

Paul, when all is said and done, we can add up the total cost of that specific engine. You money invested and mine! My problem is I haven't kept every cost but I do know what I spent, like you have!!! Everyone on this site may end up gasping for air! Some things getter better with time and some get better with money, buying the right parts ($16 bearing) and the right mechanic doing the assembly.

The engine block is on the motor stand, the crank is installed, the cylinders have been coated, the pistons have rings and NASCAR specific wrist pins are on the connectings rods and the rods are on the crank and the pistons are in the cylinders. The heads should be installed this weekend. Front cover will arrive this week, cam and rotatiing assembly should go in this week. Oil pump will arrive this week also. An old set of valve covers and an old oil pan will be fitted to the engine. Then the military engine shipping crate will be taken to the shop and Paul's engine will be placed in it for shipment. The engine will have a lite oil coating and wraped up and the lid put on the crate and bolted down and the military engine shipping crate set in the back of my pickup for transport. But for an after Christmas for delivery! Then a few more days at the Weddle house should make for a nice visit!

When Paul does get the engine at his house, I am sure a plastic surgeon will not be able to remove his smile!

Think of all thise P-400 that could of been bought, just with what I have invested!

Limey is right with the wife not getting upset and you have a very lovely and 'mellow' wife.

The easy part will be transporting the engine crate and engine! Road conditions may make the trip a little longer.

The way I see it, is the money I spent is what it cost me as a learning lesson in who to trust.

If anyone is new to this write up they can go back to "The Ultimate 6.2 Rebuild" and start there!
