Now I must hold the screwdriver to the solenoid Battery terminal to the S terminal to get the circuit to crank. Otherwise it just sparks. It's like I must hold it to the "short" to get some amps through it to get it to do what it's suppose to do. Like never before. Is it high resistance in the solenoid windings or a short in the field to ground or at the brushes?

How it works:

The solenoid coil is grounded through the stater motor (brushes / commutator).

The S wire should only have voltage (12v) when the Key is in the start position.

If your trying to crank the engine at the starter then shorting battery to the S terminal is correct. (btw, this is a really bad idea with a screwdriver, use a starter switch instead)

The starter motor will not turn until the solenoid has fully engaged the bendix. When voltage is removed from S terminal, the solenoid spring should push back the bendix and open the contact to the starter motor.

Check the crank fuse.

is that for the purple wire? ign. switch to S term?... the fuse you mention. For 2 yrs. it would immediately start with a screwdriver. now it has to be held there a bit or it just sparks no crank. no fuse from solenoid Bat terminal to battery + term. Yeah there is one on the small wire at the + term. on the way to the ign. switch. You think that one is hanging up intermittently?

one is grounded the hold in or the pull in. the other grounds through the solenoid housing to the starter. it's suppose to pull in as low as 9.5 v. I think what's wrong is that it won't ground through the brushes unless I have the high amperage off the bat terminal with the screwdriver. it seems to be jarring the bad connection loose to work either at the brushes or the solenoid washer contacts. the bad connection has gotten worse even with new solenoid contacts. Bad ground where grounded brushes screw into end cap of starter which is suppose to ground through the starter housing to block. new ground cables. it started easily with a screwdriver for along time.
