Ok so I am thinking of getting.... more like building a new truck. I really want a 6spd stick in it, now here is my thought. GM used the NV4500 for a 5spd in our trucks, Dodge also used this trans. Then dodge went to the NV5600 6spd in the 24 valves. I know 12 valve guys swap the NV4500 for the NV5600 with almost no modification so my question is what are the chances this would be possible for our trucks? Like just swap a Dodge NV5600 right in?

OK since I really want to get my ideas on paper for the truck here is the basics. 96-2K crew cab, 6ft bed, made into a dually, motor built similar to mine with a ATT and a few more go fast goodies, possibly dana 60 front then the whole 6spd idea. What you guys think? The hopes are to have it all said and done by next july cause I am planning a trip to tow the other two toys on a 35' car trailer to NC in august. This is all funds pending tho and I hate to sell the suburban to get the money I would rather sell it once the other truck is done.

I think GM made a CC/SB DRW truck late in the GMT-400 series, there is one in town here locally so that's doable. I would start looking for that now, it's be a factory truck in the configuration you want so there would be no cutting or heavy fabbing required.

Also, the NVG5600 debuted in first half of 1998, the 24V in second half of 1998 so there are some stupid rare 12V 6-speed Dodges (from the factory) out there. :D

Man do I like where this is going. Something else to consider for the swap is also the GM ZF-6. My understanding is that the DMAX shares the same bell-housing pattern as our 6.5. So a ZF-6 speed is in line... but that also puts the Allison in line to be put behind our trucks :D

I don't believe a short bed dually was ever offered from GM. Late offerings in the GMT 400 platform did include a 4dr short bed, I think in 99 and 2000 only, so they are rare.

Now that is probably true since they run the 4L80 on the Duramax vans. I geuss I need to do some measureing to see the length differences.

I know they never made a short bed dually in the GMT 400 but I love that look so I have to find a late crew cab short bed and the flares will bolt up, might have to mod the filler neck that is all. Then Alcoas here we come!

MMMM I WANT NOW!!!!

I have never seen on I just figured I would have to do it myself.

Go with a ZF6 trans out of a DURAMAX if your dead set on a 6 speed trans. Adapting a NV5600 up to a GM would be COSTLY to say the least. I know many have said that the NV-5600 came out in 98, but I have NEVER seen one. I even worked for DODGE and the first manuals for teh NV-5600 didn't come out until 01 for us when the 245HP HO came out standard with the 6 speed. I even remember DODGE advertising the NV-5600 as the all new trans just for the all new 245HP HO engine. I would love to see one in an earlier truck though.

OK so I might be able to start on this project soon, anyone know the laws on registering a diesel repower? especially in Mass where emmisions laws are so strict.

My friend has a 99 K2500 8600gvw crew cab short bed that is mint and loaded to the gills (exactly what I want) but the 350 in it is a real hurtin unit, he also has a 96 K1500 6.5 truck that runs like a top (plus has new IP and injectors) but looks like a boat anchor. My thought is get both from him and then make the 2500 the project truck and scrap the other one once I have all the parts I need. Sound like a decent plan?

I doubt that Massachusetts will allow a repower with an engine that is older than the truck it is going into.

I have never attempted this swap but from what I have read it seems there is a great deal of work involved, you have to get an adapter plate to mate the 6 speed to the transfer case and from what I understand you also have to swap the tailshaft from the 5 speed to the 6 speed case to mate with the transfer case.I belive the dimensions also change as far as length goes but the driveshafts are supposed to still fit ok I think.
Best to research these points further to make sure what I say is right though, like I said no personal experiance with that swap.

Why not just get a 4wd zf6??

That why all you have is the drive shafts to worry about...

Exactly what I was thinking. Why not use a ZF6 with its original t-case I think it is a 261 or 263. Or you could do a divorced t-case like a NP205, you have to change drive shafts anyways so why not? I will most likely be starting with a 2wd anyways. I am thinking of doing this in a 80's model that has a sm465 so improve econ.

My main concern is the clutch and fly wheel matching up with everything else

I expect you might have to change the clutch disc but I think the diameter can be matched up with the 6.5's pressure plate-been a while since I read about all the details involved.
