5.7 diesel up and running

I would warn against running diesel through the newly rebuilt pump and letting it sit up. I would run some thin oil or something that won't gel up or eat at the seals for long term storage. @Will L. may have some better ideas for what type of fluid to run through it for storage.

I first thought is maybe some tractor hydraulic fluid, the kind that is made for tractor transmissions and gear boxes. it's only a SAE 10 weight and has lubricant.
I poured some left over royal purple 2 cycle oil I had into the pump I got back from Dennis Erickson.Do you guys think that would be okay?I removed the top governor cover fitting and filled up the pump that way and also poured some royal purple down through the inlet while rotating the shaft. Then put the protective cap back in place.

That I would think would be fine, only thing I would also do is apply power to the fuel shut off solenoid and spin it so it's pumping some of that oil out the injector line ports making sure it's all though out the pump.

Today I did get the coolant filter and housing mounted to the inner fender.I realize it’s overkill but I’d like to give it a go.I have some brass Y fittings on the way from amazon to make the installation that much easier.I figured a petcock would be useful to expel any air if it gets trapped.

I also picked up a new 73-87 glowshift instrument cluster bezel from eBay that allows me to use 2” Bosch mechanical gauges.

Today a few more parts arrived for this project such as a new flexplate/converter cover,2” intake spacer with felpro gasket.

Not long ago I purchased a new cluster lense and printed circuit as what I have is in terrible shape. Some of the bulbs don’t make good connection and it’s just plain worn out.

At this point I’m going to use Bosch along with autometer white face gauges on the left side of the bezel and retain the gm speedometer and fuel gauge.Later on I could go with an autometer tach in the future if I decide to do so along with electric speedometer.Right now I have Bosch oil psi, coolant temp/trans temp and boost/vacuum gauge.I have a red indicator light for the charge system.

Yesterday I finally got the truck out of the garage under its own power for the first time in 15yrs.The coolant filter is all hooked up with shutoff valves in place.I have a new 81-87 gm truck coolant overflow bottle which I got from Amazon.I’ll put that one in place and take off the 88-98 Chevy truck version that’s currently there.

I also installed the T44 hood release option with pull cable inside the cab for 77-80 gm trucks.I just had to make a modification for the hood latch, etc.I have a feeling I might need to make the hole slightly larger but I can easily do that with a jig saw.I found a picture online of how large the hole should be after I made the first cut attempt so I’ll make what I have done a little larger.I took some vacuum hose and cut it so I could slip it over the newly cut hole.

With so much theft and such going on the last thing I need is for someone to raise the hood and steal the new Napa batteries or sabotage something.

The engine is running great at this point.I had it running on fast idle for close to an hour with no sign of any problems.Oil pressure is 40psi at hot idle.Coolant temperature is normal. The serpentine belt conversion is doing well also.I don’t see any leaks either so that’s a bonus. The hood needs to go on and give the truck a good cleaning inside and out.The bed needs to go in place also.More pictures on the way.
