Hello all,

My son's 2006 Jetta TDI has an issue with the third brake light mounted up in the back of the head liner. it apparently hasn't been working and we did not know it until recently. he's gotten pulled over twice now both let off with a warning, but it was for the third brake light not working.

I pulled the cover and the light thinking it was a bulb, but come to find out it has an LED strip in there. So I did the wrong thing and probed 12v power to the two pins on the light assembly. it lit up and worked, but when you connect it to the car it does not work.

My daughter and her husband needed to borrow the car the other day and he said he played with it and got it to intermittently work, but said the connector and the wires that he could see going into the headliner seemed fine. I also looked at it my self and verified the wires looked perfectly fine. there is no indicator on the dash like there would be if a bulb was out and I also used the vag-com to scan the car and it came up with nothing.

since my son has gotten stopped twice here in our home town I am sure the next time will be a ticket. I need to figure this out before that happens!

We have had wiring issues in the past for both the front doors and the trunk lid with them breaking at the hinge points. I since have replaced the door harnesses and repaired the trunk lid harness. I am not sure where the wire runs to, if it ties into the harness from the tail lights in the trunk or runs across the head liner to the front somewhere.

does anyone have any experience with this and might know where to look? it would save me a load of time not having to pull the interior out tracing wires.

the car also has an issue with the sun roof leaking into the passenger side floor board that I need to address too so the head liner might have to come out anyway.

don't know if this will help.....

Thanks, I will look in that area in the trunk. I posted on the VWvortex forums and one of the guys mentioned to use the VCDS on the laptop to so a light output test then probe wires at the connector for voltage or maybe a faulty ground. the signal for the brake lights comes straight from the ECM!! Oh boy here we go again with the computer controlling it all LOL

He gave me a diagram as well, so I hope it's something simple. at least this time hopefully I don't end up dismantling the entire car like I did last time only to find the problem was a simple relay under the hood!!

frankly to me there shouldn't be a thing about the third brake light needing to work as far as a requirement.
I agree.
I added a passenger mirror to a 89 Chevy Spectrum.
The cop was going to write me a ticket because the mirror got broke.
He mentioned if I hadn't added the mirror it wouldn't be an issue.

I said, "So, if the mirror wasn't there, you wouldn't write me a ticket."

He said Yep.

So I ripped the mirror off the car

No ticket

I wish it were that easy! there saying since it came with it factory it supposedly has to work. when he got his first warning I went out there and ripped it out of the car! LOL then later he got a second warning!
