If you disconnect the lines at the block, put one end in a bucket and drape a towel over the top, then use shop air to blow through it. Go easy on the air until your sure the majority of the oil is out or the surge of oil can make a serious mess. Dump the bucket and do it again, with a small funnel, pour in 1/2 quart new oil and flush it through to chase anything else can be flushed out and you can see the clean oil came through.

As for oil getting to the lifters.. are they tapping or what's up? You might need to pull a valve cover to see and use an oil pump drive (Leroydiesel.com) to see it is flowing. Make sure new full oil filter if you don't get anything. just turning the engine oil pump with a screwdriver won't seal the passages and push oil through.
