I bought this truck half put together and I started it with intake off and solenoid on side of pump removed , it ran real loud as if it were pinging if you pushed down the lever down on pass of pump it runs real well and quiet with no smoke until you reach the end of its travel then it smokes real bad and dies, I installed a solenoid from a diff ip and it wont start because it is holding the lever to the point where it smokes real bad and dies if I llosen up the attach screws it will run though, Do you think the pump is bad, I have no idea what the prob was before they tore it apart 5yrs ago but they put diff heads on it maybe off a 6.2? any tips ?

That sol. on the pump is for advancing or retarding the inj. You should be able to use the one you have and time the pump with a TDCOffsett learn. you need a bi-drectional scan tool for that. The best bet is this one if you don't have one: www.ENGHMOTORS.com

It's $190 U.S., you need Scantech, not Scanbasic

BTW welcome to the site

You have to install the stepper motor correctly, so that it properly engages.

And a lot of sensors have to be working for the PCM to control it correctly. Are all the sensors connected?

I think everything is plugged in, The ses light is off, is it possible that the pump timing is just off that much? My 95 seems to have the advance in exactly the same pos and it starts and runs fine, why is a 94 ip different and can I run a different pump from a newer truck? I have access to a snapon solis scan tool I wonder if it will do the timing?

I havent removed the ecm yet but just taking out the glovebox and seeing two butt splices on the harness makes me nervous.I will have to go back to the shop and check those numbers I do think the IP is orig I remember seeing the date code and it was 94. What is the diff on these pumps from 94 on up

Several 2500 and 3500s in 94 had a special high output 5068 IP that would not work with any other IP electronics. In 94 there was a 5068 and 5067, the 5067 won out and everything 95+ uses 5067 compatbale IPs.

The 94 5068 injection pumps were unique. They used different programing than all other ds4 electronic pumps. There should be a line on the mounting flange of the pump and a corosponding mark on the timing cover. They should be lined up exactly. A snap-on scan tool most likely won't work to set the timing and tdco learn.

My truck is a 1500 with egr so I doubt it was the HO, right. Judging by the previous owners limited memory I think the reason the heads were replaced was due to the excessive smoking so this problem has been with this truck for a while I should tear down the engine and see what I have , the oil pan has been off before and it has brass freeze plugs, the only thing that bothers me is the 35psi oil press cold at idle .I does seem to run well though when you hold the advance in the right position!

Whats your hot oil pressure at, I think 10 psi is within spec. I think if you do a learn it will run properly. The PCM will control the stepper motor to give you the proper advance.

1500 would not be HO

I havent run it long enough to find hot oil press. anybody ever had an issue with the advance control like this? I tried moving the pump to compensate for the advance being overadvanced and it almost runs ok but I am5-6mm off the timing marks on the pump!!

Unplug the Crank Position Sensor (CPS) and see how it does.

Then plug it back in and unplug the Optical Sensor (OS) on top of the IP to see how it does.

Until you do a TDCO relearn for the PCM the advance will be messed up from moving the IP.

:iagree:

And to do the learn the stepper will have to be installed
This learn has to be the first step, then the other things can be addressed.

My suggestion was to see if po had timing gears right.:mad2: If the ip had to turn that far to run plus hold advance it could be off a tooth or 2 on the cam to ip gear. It should start and run with the ip on the mark. At least good enough to warm up to 170 to do tdco learn.Or am I thinking wrong?[it is kinda late]

bottom line appears to be that I should get a gmtd scantech. Is that right that it only costs 190 is there any catch? I would probably spend that just getting the dealer to hook up an old tech 1 for an hour!! Has anyone ever got an old tech 1 cheap off of ebay?

the truck will start and run without smoke with advance disconnected, but it is so advanced it hurts my ears to stand in front! I am starting to think the pump and timing gears are ok and the prob is all in the stepper motor and its control.

What do you mean by disconnecting advance? There is no "advance" wire unless youre talking about the stepper motor. Can you fill out your signature with the known condition of the truck?

Be very specific about things and try the CPS and OS and report results. Try to position the IP straight up, with the timing wedge on the timing cover pointing at the edge of the IP mounting flange. Once you moved the IP and did not perform the TDCO or not knowing where you started, the PCM also no longer knows where its starting from.

I have no tach and no charging. I swapped with my 95 and the 94 alt worked on the 95 but the 95 wouldnt work on the 94 so I know it is a prob with the 94 truck the big pos has power but the other two do not. I am thinking of buying a tech 1 will that do a timing relearn or is there a member nearby with what I need that would do it for cash?
