So I'm killing some time at work today, and I pull my hx40 out of my toolbox that I've got holed away to see what kind of shape it's in, and I notice it has an 18cm hot side on it. Oddly enough, it is a t3 flanged internally gated housing. I WAS under the impression that 18cm housings where non gated t4 flanged turbos. In case you're wondering, I pulled it out of our scrap bin at work (no core turbo replacement, cummins distributor, all I did was pay scrap price for it)

Discuss :)

Fairly large housing. Probably too large for a 6.5L in my opinion. Others may have had luck with them. I'm sure people will chime in

Yeah, mine is that size because I am running the spool valve but by itself the large housing would not spool really at all for me

Just as an FYI, this will be center mounted when the project is done, with external wastegates as the holset IWG only vents one scroll.

So one bank can have different drive pressure than the other? Doesnt seem like the way to do things. You seem to be good friends with Cumminsfever and you know he vented both banks on his EWG setup

Cumminsfever and I are brothers. And he vented both banks but while we were trying to tune it we realized that venting both side is not ideal. The turbo falls flat when the gate opens . Only venting one side keeps the turbo spinning while bleeding drive pressure.

Velly velly intelesting... You don't think it could be a byproduct if him using such a large turbo on such a small engine? It just doesn't seem like you'd want that difference in drive pressure between banks. I suppose I could always just not wastegate it at all and allow fuel and my right foot to do the boost control :). I also plan on testing an hx35 and banks sidewinder in the center mount configuration, because I have them... free, and for shnitzengiggles.

On a side note, sorry about your brother. It was a kick in the nuts to read that after all the awesome threads, so I can't imagine what you felt like. His center mount thread gave me a lot of valuable information on that kind of setup. Just wish there where more of these engines running a GOOD (not stock) center mount setup.

Yea, definetly a kick in the nutz ... I just came from visiting him today.
And yes some of it was the size of the turbo but your 18cm housing will be close to the same size as far as turbine housings are compared. His may have been a tad bit smaller actually. One sure way to find out is to build and experiment.

How are you going to do the center mount? I trying to get ideas for when l do mine..

Yes, experiment I will!!!

As far as where I'll mount it, umm its a center mount, soooooo in the center of the engine??? But seriously though, check out cumminsfever's center mount thread. It'll look like that only smaller turbo. Very similar to how modern v8 diesels are mounted, only spun about 90*.

I have read through his thread, but most of the pics are gone..
