09 Silverado 3500 Key relearn with Tech 2?

Hey all,

I picked up a 09 C3500 6.0 gasser for parts off an auction, unknown condition. Upon pickup, I have reason to believe all that is keeping this thing from running is getting the passlock module to talk to the key. I think the company who sold it lost the key and tried swapping a key and tumbler out of some other gmt900, as the key i had cut by the dealer to match the VIN before I went to pick it up (I was told there wasnt a key, luckily there was a key) will work in the doors but wont work in the ignition. current ignition key is a cheap dorman all metal key with no plastic trim, and the lock cylinder plastic looks newer than the rest of the dash plastic.

I have a tech 2 with a Candi module and had it plugged in last night, and could get to the key area of the tech 2, but cant seem to initiate a relearn, but I also am not experienced with the tech 2. It did tell me that there are 2 stored keys and zero authorized keys present, which seems to confirm my suspicion that they swapped the key and tumbler.
Is key programming possible with just the tech 2, or do I have to be hooked to a programming laptop (TIS2000?) with security access?
If I have to have the programming laptop, is it possible to instead program a new cylinder and that new GM key I had cut with the old 3) 10 minute key cycle method? I really dont want to try and learn the current key because its not the right one, and not even sure it can relearn an all metal key as I was under the impression the magnetic chip is in the plastic shroud and is necessary for passlock operation.

Without scrounging a key for our 08 Maliblu, IIRC, the chip is in the metallic portion of the key.

Take the key you have that works the ignition to one of the auto parts houses and have them check it. iirc they have the equipment to tell you if the key has a working chip.

as for getting the passlock to learn a key, idk if the tech2 will do it, but I have heard that you have to have 2 working keys otherwise you'd need to have a locksmith or the dealer make program it. what I'm suspecting is that the dorman switch and key that was installed is for a model that didn't use passlock. This might be why the tech2 won't enter the key programming, the ECM isn't seeing the receiver in the ignition switch. you might end up having to get a new switch and key from GM and then do the relearn.

something I learned on these newer double sided keys... if you can't get a tumbler that is keyed for the factory key that matches the doors, once you get a programmed key, you can have others made that have one side cut for the doors and the other side cut for the ignition. That way the single key will work both, just flip for the door or the ignition.
