What I did, a few years back was to purchase a pair of running board fuel tanks. They were on a 96 ex-cab 4x4 GMC, the person had them custom made for a ton of dollars, and I got them real cheap. Had to have the front cut back 2 inches for my 265's to clear, but they still hold 45 gallons each...
After lots of reading and thoughts of doing an engine swap I got the parts. In a few months I will remove the 250 in line 6 from my 81 2 wheel drive short box and replace it with a 6.2. Rebuild the A833 trans in the process and have a good driver that will get good mileage.
