I think you are gonna be outta luck. I don't believe there are any 2-speed rearends out there that would fit under a pickup. I think some of the older trucks, like pre-60's 1.5 ton trucks had them, but were geared to pull serious weight and I think they were underdrives instead of overdrives...

If it were me, I would start with a rear differential service, removing the cover, draining gear oil, replace gasket and install cover, then fill with the proper gear oil and additive. There is a better than even chance this will alleviate the problem. Unless you have service records it's hard...

I'm not sure what size the alternator is no doubt whatever was cheap and stock! It probably would be a lot easier to upgrade the alternator than trying to wire in a second battery.
