Well, nothing like pulling an all nighter just to have things not go your way in the end! They are sealing the parking lot where I work tomorrow, and I had every hope of driving the 'burb some this weekend.... not gonna happen...
I have it running - good news...
Bad news - I have no...
now that you have narrowed it down some, I would suggest dropping the dust cover as far as the crossover allows. You should be albe to learn something that way. You can always strategically cut the crossover, and re assemble with band clamps as a temporary measure while you wait for another...
Just because the glow plugs are coming on, doesnt mean they are actually working. Whats the temperature where you are? I know my 6.2 wont start without functional glows up to 70+ ambient temp.
You might be able to drop the cover enough to see in there... plus, usually when the bolts back out, they hit the cover, so you might be able to get it out of the way enough to see if the noise goes away.
I am planning to remove my vacuum pump when I install the 'new' engine in my 95. The question I have, is when the pump is removed, is it just taken off the mounting bracket? or do you remove the whole bracket? It appears to me that the bracket might provide some additional support to the AC pump.
Yeah, needless to say I have 2 complete new balancer sets now... 1 for the donor engine, 1 for the wifes Burb.
I will see what I can do for some better pictures. I dont intend to pull that engine much farther apart than you see it, as I only needed the oil pan from the bottom, valve covers...
An update to this thread...

I bought one from AZ for our burb... it didnt make it a year! it left me stranded at home and out of time, so I got a NAPA replacement for it... seems MUCH better.
So... the other night, we were out to Applebees for dinner. When we left, we took a shortcut across the front of the grocery store next door. Just as we stopped at the crosswalk sign, the PMD decided to do its thing. I popped the hood, jumped out, ran over to the nearest snowbank, grabbed a...
Matt, I am ringing in the year with quite the pile over here. We got a little over a foot last night, and it really hasnt stopped!
Sure wish I had the Burb done... as the ole Blazer is a little loud with one missing exhaust pipe!
PMD was my first guess too when I talked to Steve this morning. I wish I had a known good spare... but it seems all my extra's are now duds :-( (although I have yet to test them myself)
Hmm... now that I think about it, I might have an extra functional, if I can find the pump in the snow! (bad...
