If your batteries aren't in good shape these trucks will drain them in a matter of seconds, lots of load trying to start a 6.5TD. When i got my '93 it had been sitting for about 18 months, i had a h*ll of a time getting it running. Drained 2 new 1100CCA batteries, it sputtered a little but...
I went to one down by Warner Robbins AFB in southern GA. What shocked me was the bidding on the 6.5 and 6.2's. I figured that as old as they were there wouldn't be that much interest, WRONG!! I wound up paying more than i had planned for, but i got the updated blocks/heads on both engines i...
Last year i bought 2 of the ex-military hummer 6.5's from Govt auctions. Both looked just about new inside after dropping the oil pan although one had a little rust in the cylinders - looked like some water had gotten in one side (cylinders 2,4,6). The other one looks great, i'd bet neither was...
I pull car trailers with mine a lot, it's pretty hilly here so i prefer the 4.11 rear on my dually. The '50s and '60s cars i tow are pretty heavy, especially compared to anything recent so i'm pulling about 8000 to 10000 lbs behind the old truck. (Now that's not towing heavy compared to other...
Usually head bolts have a shoulder on the shank that centers the bolt in the head, also some are necked down in the middle as well. Can't use regular bolts in place of head bolts as grade 8 isn't good enough to withstand the heat & forces for very long.

Humm interesting, my truck had 205,000 on the original DB2 when i turned it up 1/3 turn. After about 6 months it resumed it's hot start issue but ran a heck of a lot better with more power. I didn't see any new issues after turning it up, and i ran it that way for about 18 months. :o)

My '93 Chevy Silverado 3500 6.5TD has 210,000 with the original engine still clicking along. My other '93 GMC SLE 1500 with a 350 has 209,000 and it still original as well. Tough trucks!!

The code 86 is triggered by a mis-match on the input vss and output vss for what gear it thinks it's in. My '93 had similar issues a couple of years ago. I replaced both the 1-2 and 3-4 shift solinoids and the problem went away. The output vss is what drives the speedo, input vss is only for the...
On my '93 i went 180 thermostat, got the SSD Dmax fan & HD clutch combo, and used the '97 HO pump that bolts the fan-clutch on instead of the spin on type. Cleaned both the A/C condensor and radiator good and since then i haven't seen mine above 200F even when it's 99F outside and pulling 8500...
Dorman
While Dorman is being discussed, their 6.5 balancers and crank pulleys are also made in China and the rubber on those don't last either. Dorman has apparently went down the crapper!! IMO I bought a set from NAPA and after 2 years both were cracked. :mad2:

There are a couple of differences between the GM-3 and the GM-8, the -3 has the spring wastegate from the factory kinda like the turbomaster but not adjustable while the -8 is a vacumn operated setup. The -8 is more effecient as well as the -3 has a more restrictive elbow and thus raises the IAT...
The DB2 831-4911 was the factory IP on the '92 and 93 6.5TD's. The 31 on the 831 is .31 plungers, thus more fuel than the 6.2 829 with .29 plungers. I think there was also govenor changes as well for the 4911 IP. My '93 had the 4911 and eventually it had the common hot start issues with...
The cold advance and fuel shutoff are in the cap, only thing about swapping the cap is you have to be carefull how you put in on. Install it wrong and you could have a run-away engine until you cut the fuel or it blows. The cold advance and tps are external to the IP on the DB2, they bolt on the...
I thought the trans dipstick was stamped on it "check in park engine hot" or something like that. If i do a drain & refill I always cycle through all the gears, Neutral as well and then check back in park..etc until it's full and warmed up.

The '92 and '93 are known for hot start issues, the DB2-4911 IP's in those years develop excesive head-spaceing and when warm/hot don't generate the pressure needed to start right up. (my '93 included) Next time it does that, pour about a gallon or room-temp water over it and see if it starts...
Thanks Missy!! I called the closest Stanadyne service shop & asked what it would cost if they did it and got a smart-a** answer - oh just swap the cover - BS. I'll call these people.
