Can a starter short out internally and engage on its own while driving?

Starter woes.

Wow I guess anything is possible. Maybe a loose ign switch was triggered by a bump? Or the solenoid by itself from a bump?

Or wiring chafed into another hot wire in the harness?

I’ve seen it once on a 6.5. Something went crazy in The solenoid, it cranked until the side posts melted out of the batteries (never starting because the key was off).
Two guys went through the harness independently then together- no issues were found. Stater was smoked obviously.
New starter, new batteries, all was fine.

A service truck. I can’t remember what type starter it was, might have been a delco but idk. This was 20 years ago.
Once removed, I hooked up a set of jumper cables to test the starter and it started cranking as soon ground as the main cable was hooked up.

The REMY starter died so I got Famous Brand (carquest) on closeout from rockauto. So I'm going to chase some wires before I buy another starter. But I'm 95% sure the current starter is bad. Now to find a wiring diagram.

Yes the ignition is a possibility. So is shorted wires in the harness.

If the purple solenoid wire has rubbed through or shorted to a live wire, that will cause the starter to self crank.

I have a new starter on the way. I'll swap it out and go from there.
