Looking for real world experience on a good brand to buy. I have a DeWalt gear reduction that bit the dust and it can't have 4-5 hours on it. Turns out the motors are junk
 
I've always heard good things about the Dewalts.

I have put several hundred blades through my Makita with only 1 change of brushes.

Milwaukee also has a good rep. Though I haven't used one personally.
 
I have always thought they made OK tools. Not the best but decent. When my armature went out I checked into replacing it and found out it is a common failure item. They want $75 for a new one which will likely have the same issues. So I thought if I could find one with a good reputation I'd just cut my losses and buy it.
 
I've got an awful lot of years on my Makita. Including with a diamond blade and using it on bricks and tile on a couple of jobs. Still works well but I don't use it very often. When I want to make a cut on thick stuff and bar stock I use a power bandsaw type hacksaw.
 
My 16" Makita has been around for many years. It used to see svere duty. I'm guessing it's at least 25 years old
 
For a friction cut off, I have a Ryobi of all things.. It seems to have more beans if I plug it directly into a wall outlet...

It was superseded by my Kalamazoo horizontal band saw there a few years back.
 
I'll see if I can get a pic. The Model 2414 - 14" & the 2416 - 16" are very similar. mine was from before the quick release on the vise. I can't believe I never bought that part after it came out. Friend of mine has had a Makita 14" for years. Another friend has had a Chicago Electric for years, but I think that is a fluke.
I lucked out and bought a foot high stack of 16" blades at an auction for almost nothing. They lasted me for years. Apparently I was the only guy there with a 16" saw

got my new saw today model 2414db with a universal motor and switch so it can be ran off the older welders. Got it from Toolbarn $194 +$8.99 shipping

It should be good to go. I don't know how many blades
I've put through mine. I tend to save blades that won't cut through a certain thickness and reuse them later. I've thrown away many piles a foot thick with the Makita saw
 
You might think me crazy. :willynilly: But I just put a 12" metal blade in my DeWalt chop saw. Yea a wood chop saw. and it has clamps and compound miters. Works like a charm. You get a little discoloration from the spark spray but so what.

If you are cutting Al. you are ok. Metal cutting saws turn at about 1450 rpm's.

Got that Tshirt too. Use mine for really small stuff.
