Hey I did a search on this on the fuel forum here but didn't see anyone pose the question or be able to answer it on my own. So my question is if WVO causes IP failure prematurely why wouldn't you mix in an additive with it to lubricate the fuel system to prevent this from happening? It just seems like one of those why not things imo.
And then another thing that peaks my interest is rapeseed oil and has anyone experimented with that?

Thanks

Bio fuels are the best lubricant according to tests.

The problem with the wvo ruining IP's is most likely due to water and/or acids leftover. Also too thick due to lack of heating IMO.

Well I'm thinking of using like a 100 gallon tank in the bed and fab up a tank heater and then have an inline heater to keep the temps up and have a separate filtration and water separator system on that. Then use one of those tank switchers from an 80 something truck to switch between regular diesel and the WVO. And it wouldn't take anything to put additives in to take water out as well. I eventually want to get to pressing my own oil out of whatever I could get my hands on basically. I want to get as independent as I can with everything. It makes more sense to me than paying $4plus a gallon anyhow

i have used rape(canola) as wvo and can't tell the diff between it and the others.
here is a man who uses sunflower oil, freshly squeezed. http://www.oilcrusher.5u.com/
i emailed him and received an answer each time. i am using his recipe on used veg oil and have had great results.
give his site a read and draw your own conclusions but it made a believer out of me.
BTW, he isn't trying to sell you anything on his site, it's for information only.

Dude deejaa your the man! That site was such an interesting read and very helpful. Going about it that way sure would save time and make things easier. Are you running filtered and cleaned WVO mixed using his recipe or are you pressing your own oil? This gives me some direction now for wanting to run biodiesel for sure. I wasn't too hot about that idea to begin with with all of the custom fab and energy consumed. Have you looked at listeroids at all?

How are you getting your oil?

i am using waste veg oil. i have an agreement with a VFW that i get it from on my way to work. he had 5 gallons for me yesterday. i will pay him 5.00 each gallon. only problem, he only has at the most, 15 gallons a month. it's fried fish oil. the other day i came to a stop and the exhaust smell came into the open windows. both of the girls said they smelled fried chicken.
i bought a centrifuge that was homemade. only spun 3400 rpm. i made a pulley drive for it, bumped rpm to 6000. g's are 9000. it's been awhile since i've looked at the figures so i might be off on exact rotations/g's. i have a link for an rpm/g force calculator that i used.
i thought i had another source of oil but it fell through. i need 40 gallons a week when i drive the 93. it's mechanical so it tolorates wvo/mix better. the 96, i only use 1/2 mix and 1/2 diesel. had a little fish bite running 100% so i cut it. lots of cutthroat dealings in the used oil business. working on another. fried seafood, mmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!
no listeroids yet. have done a little research into it but can't see spending 800.00 and then another 2-300.00 for the generator. i will look into it more intently in the future when i get a reliable source of oil and i can justify the cost to my money manager.
but, to be honest, i use a ratio for the mix, same ingredients as Daniel McAmoil uses but i don't use a hydrometer, it's a specific recipe. i'm not using raw oil so i think i can get by without one. i will send it PM but i ask that you please not post the recipe on the web. it was an agreement i made and hope to keep.

I hope that is a typo and you are not paying $5.00 a gallon for used oil.

I mainly asked to see if you were buying a seed crop for cheap and using a press.

I saw cheap hand crank press on fleebay for around $130. I just have no idea how to by large quantities of sunflower seeds.

I really do not have the time or money to jack around with this but, I am very curious.

Thanks for your long reply.

I would be interested in the recipe, I may use it one day.

Thanks,

it's a typo. thank you short correction times. i pay 1.00 a gallon. with additives, comes out to 1.60 a gallon. considering that i drive 600 miles a week, 18 mpg avg, 27-30 gallon /week, cost at 3.65/gallon, cost per week is close to 180.00. using wvo, 1/2 mix, other half diesel, cost per week is 115.00. figure that saves close to 4000.00 per year. i do a lot of driving, more than average.

I saw that cheap press on eBay too. Take the hand crank off of it and put a pulley on there and use an electric motor to drive it would make more sense to me. That and it would be a cheap way to get by for a while to press your own stuff. It doesn't necessarily have to be sunflower oil but my understanding is that is what that guy has found to be the best to use. And you can find feed sources almost anywhere you just have to know where to look is all. Try finding a local grain elevator or local feed store where you can deal in bulk and the pressings that are byproduct you can sell back to them for use in their feed mixes... This stuff is more viable than you think you just have to look at it from outside the box perspective. I'm going to do it for sure. You lose your convenience factor of just pulling up to a pump and paying out the @$$ to having to do some work and potential to save a good amount of money. Plus systems can be automated fairly easily lol

I'm saving for a press. I grow canola and have cattle I could feed the byproduct to so it makes since to me but the press I am wanting $$$$

Went to school for biodiesel crop production so its obviously an interest of mine.

i think a dual tank is best for svo as my recent problem with a snot sock showed. i dont think i will run more than 50% at a time from now on. looking at the moving parts on the rear of both IP's, one running oil, other not, i couldnt tell the 2 apart.

I don't think percentage is as much of a factor as quality of the oil. I think you could run up to 100% if the ambient temps were good and the oil was fully processed

Its my understanding,
Boidiesel from a commercial souce is very dry and has basicaly no IP lubricating attributes. I would add some 2stroke oil to it.
Biodiesel from homemade is great for lube.
Also Biodiesel is not the same thing as WVO alot of pepole interchange the terms, but they are very different.

Hey I ran my Mercedes 10000 miles on a wvo blend n now my truck for almost 10000 miles. I think its all about fuel pressure, if ur ip is cavitating and fighting the oil it will shear the shaft. GM err Stanadyne uses a shaft with a deliberate thin spot so it will shear and not ruin the inside surfaces of the ip, that way u can rebuild it. My blend is soybean oil from a local restaurant filtered thru blue jeans, then home water filter n then 5 micron socks. Then I blend 1 qt of reg gas without ethanol, 2 qts k-1, 4 ounces power service n the grey bottle, one ounce snake oil, 5 gallon wvo. Do the hot pan test for water on every barrel. Works for me.
