Got this truck (93 3500 6.5 TURBO w/175,xxx miles) from a friend who has had it sitting in a garage for the past year. I just recently took it off his hands. I charged the batteries and changed fuel and oil filter. I had jump the battery off in order to get it started. It would crank but would not start w/o a boost. Once we got it started it ran great and I drove it around for a while with no problems. After driving it for a few miles I left the truck running in my driveway for an hour or so. I shut the truck off and went inside to watch some football. After about an hour I went back outside and started the truck (and at this moment my luck ran out). The truck fired right up, ran for about 5 seconds and died. I have charged the batteries to full charge, attempted to jumpstart the truck multiple times. I checked the air and fuel filter. The truck already had fresh diesel in it. The GP lights come on. No check engine light was on. I have not load tested my batteries yet but will do first thing tomorrow. The truck was running excellent before it was put up for a year. Am I missing something. Im by no means a diesel expert but I'm learning the basics.

ANY ADVICE WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED!!!
:mad2:

Welcome!!

Have you bleed the air?? Make sure the fuel filter is tight.

It is a 93, I suspect the Oil Pressure Sender (OPS) which also runs the Lift Pump (LP) may be bad.
This may cause the LP not to run after the engine start.
Try to put 12V direct source to the LP and see if you can start and keep it running.
If you do, OPS is bad.

Report the finding to us.

Fuel filter is tight. I did bleed the air. I will try hooking a 12v direct source to the LP and see if I can get it to start and stay running. I'll post what I find out. Thanks for the advice JMJNet

Bad batteries are difficult to jump and jump starting a dual battery diesel is very difficult. Getting 1200 amps through jumper cables: you are using maybe a single 850 CCA battery? Just not enough juice to spin 21:1 compression over fast enough. Without enough RPM, 100 RPM min, the engine will not start. Bad batteries also harm the starter with a 'brownout' and will cook off the stock weak alternator. Get some good batteries in there! Seriously a gas engine may barely turn over and the spark gets it going. A diesel will bleed off compression and not have enough heat to light the diesel and start if spun too slow. (Batteries that have self discharged and sat for a long time are usually sulfated out to the point of worthless.)

Grounds at the battery cable ends are known corrosion points. So are the battery connections and even the cables themselves. Disassemble and clean the grounds and the battery connections. This can also cause slow cranking.

After sitting for a year you can get algae in the fuel that can plug the fuel filter.

Service engine soon light is a bulb and 'computer has power' indicator. You will never see it light up unless the engine stalls or the RPM sensor/wiring dies. It only controls the transmission and no emissions equipment - so no codes it will set will ever trigger the SES light. The computer can be missing and the engine will start and run normally.

Thanks to all... Sorry it took me so long to respond. The fuel pump was out and we replaced it. Problem solved....
Thx guys
