Your 6.2L opinions/stories??

I'm looking to get information about 89 and up 6.2L's (actually looking into a 1991 6.2)... Pro's and Con's, horror stories or good stories, usually hard to get unbiased judgement but am interested in what everyone has to stay.

My brother was saying that there were things about this truck that he said seem "off"... such as the z71 sticker, not stock placement? and he believes that all diesels 88-98 had the two air holes in the bumper... Anyone have any input? greatly appreciated

I'm not sure about the 6.2 trucks but yeah all the 6.5TD ones had the holes. 6.2 is a damn good engine. IN that Bodystyle, it's easy to turbo and best of all...NO ELECTRONICS...You could PU a turbo setup off a junk 6.5 and give it a nice kick in the ass or just drive it like it is. 6.2NA gets good MPG and if cared for can last 350k miles.

My neighbor has a 91 4x4 2500 that just rolled up on 290K. The trans has been rebuilt but the truck has towed many heavy loads (not quickly) but dependably. His motor has never been apart, the injectors are original the pump was rebuilt once. It started all last winter without being plugged in (I did hook up a manual glow plug overide for him). It leaks & uses some oil & also has had some front end work but the motor has been rock solid. That is a great motor, not fast but dependable & gets great mpg.

That's a very nice looking truck but $3200 is about 1K more then it's worth IMHO.

X2 on what everyone else has said so far.

If you plan on towing heavy or often with it, you may be disappointed with a NA 6.2 as they were bred for MPG, long life, and occasional light towing....... not for stump pulling torque or running 70 up a hill with a loaded car trailer.

If you want it for a daily driver, occasional light towing, or a long lasting diesel....I think you will be happy with a NA 6.2. As others have said, take care of it and it will last a long time. Hardly anything ever goes wrong with them.

AK does ur 6.2 have 700000 on the original motor, I hope so! How many miles is that?

Mine has 294000 miles and I tow with it with no problem but never been in the mountains, I pull a horse trailer that weighs about 6500 lbs and get 16 mpg doing it and without the trailer I get 25 mpg. Its slow getting to 60 mph but once u get there it can hold it steady.

I love my 91 in signature. It gets 20 mpg, and that is with EGR, and high RPMs to do freeway speed.

It will not
win any drag races,
tow a big trailer,
tow any trailer at 70 mph up a hill
get up to speed very quickly

but it will
get awesome fuel economy
last a long time with proper care
be one of the more dependable trucks you have owned

problems that plagued the 6.5L affect this as well, mostly the shitty oil cooler lines, oil pressure sensor/switch, etc.

I love mine, but know its limitations, know yours, and you will be happy.

Needs headlights replaced... Tires... Possible been in a wreck with the gasser bumper w/o airholes. it is a shortbed - what fun is that with a small fuel tank? It is also a 1500 and the brakes on 1500's are undersized junk.

How many miles on it? That determines value and how much other cash you may have to sink into it.

the 6.2s never came with the bumper with the holes. That was a 6.5T only thing. The holes in the bumper were designed to direct more air to the cooling stack in front of the radiator(oil/trans). The 6.2 had the coolers in the radiator tanks. No bumper holes needed.

"mileage is unknown for the past 6 years according to the dmv and i have had it for 4 months", I think he even means the mileage odometer doesnt work?... says he buys and sells cars. new front brakes (he's probably too poor to do them all.....) and im guessing stock brake lines and oil lines... guy doesn't seem to know really anything about it, and i thought i was ignorant about vehicles...

Sounds like an auction vehicle to me. This guy bought it for $1200 & is now trying to double his profit. With the lack of documentation it surely is not worth any more then $2K & that's stretching it IMO.

The 6.2 trucks didn't have nostrils in the bumper[it wouldn't hurt to have them though]. My 91 made it to 310,000 miles and still ran great. The questionable 700r4 tranny went out again and the frame was rusted out is why I junked it. It did get as high as 28 mpg on a long highway run. It got around 20 doing normal driving. I had cranked the injection pump up 1/4 turn and had Banks 3" exhaust. Very reliable except for the crap tranny.
