Another 50 bucks wasted

Got the engine out right now, figured I'd put a new
timing chain on it while it's out, got the new one in,
and it's no tighter than the old one with 230,000
miles on it! :mad2:

Cloyes timing chains are very tight. Melling is very loose. I put a melling in my 6.2 with over 280,000 miles and the melling wasn't any better than the one I took out.

Maybe it's the sproket(s)......I remember gmctd saying, the teeth wear down....or something to that effect.

It's a cloyes chain... after tightening the cam sprocket, it's
a little bit better - probably 1/4 - 3/8", compared to 1/2 - 5/8"
for the original chain. It's all in now, not gonna worry about it.
For those of you following my thread "occasional rod knock",
got the new rocker arm bolts in today, timing chain, cleaned up
the block, hopefully no more oil leaks, put in a new water
pump while it's apart, gonna test all the glows before the
engine goes back in - still gotta put valve covers on, change
exhaust manifold gaskets, all new heater hoses, fuel lines,
change the rear main seal, it's not leaking, but over 230,000
miles, and the engine is on the ground.... :smile5:

Got new ones, and new tranny mount too.....
I wish I had time to really clean / degrease it, and paint it
all nice and purty like Robyn did hers, but that Jeep is killin me!
Plus I gotta finish the truck while I remember where
everything goes... I labeled most of the wires

Just blast it while you can with rustoleum at the very least. Even if its over grease ...

I want to change my engine mounts, but they look such a bitch, plus mine are rusty busty too....

All 6.5 GMT400 mounts should be the same, right?

FYI, I just did a chain only in my 6.2 (with 6.5 goodies) and the chain was perfect. Cloyes.

I buy the cloyes 3 piece timing sets. For the $15 extra for the new sprockets ,it's well worth it, to have it so tight it almost binds. I use energy suspension polyurethane motor mount inserts[3.1116r] The quality of any rubber parts nowdays is very questionable.

I would seriously consider doing the front oil seal and the harmonic dampener - replace with Fluidampr. TurboVanMan said it made a big difference in smoothness and lack of vibration.

You don't mention changing the sprockets? I've never heard of just changing the chain.
Did you change them all?
Mine were all tight when reinstalled.

No, after reading a lot of posts saying that chains stretch,
but the sprockets really don't wear, I didn't change the
sprockets - I should have known better, but it's all together
now, and not THAT bad. Staying like it is now.
All oil seals will be changed, brand new balancer last week...

I have seen just the chain on Summit's web site ,and was tempted to try it. With new main and cam bearings my factory one might be tighter ?

Are you kidding?
If not & for any other silly people - If you mess with the timing chain do it with a set & be done. They are not that expensive. It's not a good place to save $20.
