What would I find under there? Think the paint would be off color? I really don't care for the black plastic flares. They'll just fade out and look bad at some point so if I can yank them off there I'd like to do it. Just a little worried about what it's going to look like under them and if the paint doesn't match how hard it would be to put them back on.

removing fender flares.....

paint may or may not be faded. less likey with the newer paints they use today. it may be a little scratched where the molding meets the body. also you may be removing the double face tape. plan on buffing the truck to make your well worn paint scratches and all match the shiny brandy new stuff thats been protected for years.

I have started this process. I have removed one and its pretty clean under the flair. There is a line where the flair has rubbed on the fender over the years. I buffed most of it out. Its still there if your really looking for it but at a glance or walk around its not very noticable. Now I have to remove the other three....
when you get finished can you post a picture up? What color is your truck? Did you try 3m scratch remover for the marks? That with a porter cable will get quite a bit out of the paint. I'm thinking the truck will look a ton better with those gone. I'm just not a fan of black plastic all over a vehicle. When it ages it gets really ugly.

My truck is white with the flat black flairs. I have not tried the 3M but I might look into it. I will try and post pics next week...
ok, finally got the balls to do it this morning. No pain...No gain. I'm glad I did. I hate black plastic on any truck. Now I just gotta get my nerve up to do the doors........ 
There's a little bit of a line where the flare was and where the 2 sided tape was but it doesn't look like anything that I can't get out with the buffer and some 3M. Like I say, I want to do the doors next, after that the running boards go in favor of some chrome step bars, then the front bumper goes in favor of something with no black plastic on it. I'm just not sure if I have the nerve to do the doors. I'm terrified a big chunk of paint is gonna come off with the molding. I will probably wait until it gets hot this summer and hit them with a hair dryer before taking them off. I've pulled moldings before and have always had good luck but it only takes 1 time for you to regret even messing with it.

I removed all the badges and molding on my 02. Its comes off very clean. I used a heat gun to warm it up and others use fishing line to cut the adhesive with out hurting the paint. You will like the truck if the remove molding. I don't regret mine....

I like the fender flares on these trucks, to be honest. Covers the tires better, and gives it a more rugged look. The fenders look kind of crappy without flares.
For the moldings, use fishing line and a wheel for removing glue, basically a big eraser, on a handheld drill. Buffs off no problem. I also saw on TRUCKS! where they used a plastic bondo spreader to pry it off, and just pulled the whole thing off after getting the one end pulled off, again using the eraser wheel on the glue.
