what is the best tuner for a LLY that is driven daily and should work without jumping through many hoops as hooking up notebooks and stuff ?
(i am a 6.5er and have no clue)

what else are must do's in terms of modifications and Preventative Maintenance?

truck in question is a 2005 Dually that has 80k miles and constantly has about 300 lbs MIN of tools in the bed of the truck and pulls a lot of weight (excavating equipment) frequently.

thanks in advance for your reply.

Well

This is a can of worms to post about first of all. Hands down EFILive software is the best there is. But you should have a built Allison for it. So if you want handheld that you can read and clear codes with, it would be Diablo Sport Predator. IMO. Don't go beyond 85hp tune, to save the Allison trans. Also you will need to buy some good gauges: Boost, Pyro, trans temp. If your on a budget you can get by with just the Pyro temp. gage.

I'd vote for the Diablo Sport Predator if you're looking for a good bang for the bunk, out of the box tune. No real need for pyro or boost unless you're pulling loads 24/7. The predator wont get hot enough running around town to worry about.

Hypertech is also good, as is Superchips and PPE.

I'll echo the Predator for tuning an LLY if you do not want to get into really big power and do not have the coin for tranny upgrades.

Upgrade wise, all that a working truck that will never pull sleds to run down the track needs is regular oil and filter changes, fuel filter every 10k or so, and an Allison spin-on replacement every 15-20k.

The transfer case pump rub modification is cheap insurance as well.

Some of us that went with bigger power included tranny tweaks, pitman/idler arm braces, tie rod sleeves, exhaust, intake, etc.

was there not a tuner that allowed on the fly changing of tunes and also displayed EGT, boost pressure and so forth ??? i cannot remember if it was BERKs truck i saw that in or Pepperidges ( i know not an LLY ) but there was something like that ....

thanks for the info guys !

Well if you have a fat wallet the sky is the limit. Banks system has that, Edge has that. for three times the price of Predator.

Might I say EFI LIVE is on the fly also and its the best you can get. But you have to buy gages. The disadvantage of the Banks and Edge system is they are electronic gages read from electronic sensors. They are believed to be less accurrate then Mechanical gages.

one of those systems puts you in the range of 900 bucks plus. they are good, but the tuning imo is best on the predator. if your going to go that route then buy gauges and install then pick a tuner out there and buy efi. it is so much better and you can get a nice tow tune plus milage tune. you good with computers so the software part should be pretty easy for you. plus you have a good support base between here and mcrats site for it.

what is the best exhaust for the same truck ? i am guessing a tune and exhaust combo is the best bang for the buck and gets hp and economy.

The can of worms is growing. These are all Opinions.
To save money:
DiabloSport Predator 350.00
MBRP aluminmized steel exhaust 350.00
Kennedy TurboBoost valve 95.00
Larger Transmission cooler 250.00 for towing
Gages Pyrometer,Boost,maybe Trans temp.
Some percentage of Biodiesel or injector cleaner

Did I missing something, probably.

You can add the V2 w/fan(radiator) to the list.

I had an LLY and I never had a problem. But thats a different discussion for a different day.

Nick, all the exhaust systems are gonna sound the same. There is no "best" exhaust or "best" programmer. They all do the same thing. All these exhaust are priced a bit differently and have different quality metals but they're all straight flow through designs with no chambers so there isnt really a difference in how they sound.

MBRP, AFE, Silverline, Magnaflow all make top quality systems.

I was just responding to the

constantly has about 300 lbs MIN of tools in the bed of the truck and pulls a lot of weight (excavating equipment) frequently.

For me the fuel savings alone made the install of the V2 well worth the money. Add to that, the improved cooling and not worrying about overheating when pulling lots of weight make it high up on my list of worth while mods.

I know what you were referring to. This, as I'm sure you know, is highly controversial. All I was saying is that I never had a problem and I was living in Louisiana at the time. You being in Alberta and overheating, I dont blame you for doing the v2 mod.

Don't forget the EGR block and finger and possibly a PCV reroute. I'm also a new fan of James' Banks IC tube he just installed...
Oh BTW, I never had a cooling problem with my LLY either.

mine would o/h in a heart beat if i let it. i dont tow enough during the summer months so it is not an issue yet, but i know the answer if it ever is a problem.
