I'm having a hard time deciding between cutting off the muffler versus buying a 4in turboback silverline stainless steel from a friend for dad's '02 lb7. Anybody want to steer me one way or the other?

One way is pretty much Free, the other is a couple Hundred Bucks.

I say Chop the Muffler, if it's too Loud, no biggie, it was only a few Bucks, but if you Spend the Money for the Silverline, and it's too Quiet, then you're out a few Hundred.

That's what I'm thinking.. get rid of the muffler and if I don't like it then go for the silverline.

How do must people remove the muffler? Torch it off and weld in a new pipe?

I would suggest a sawzall for removal, I think that is what most use.

i took my muffler off my lmm and it was a waste of time and money. it made no difference even with out the dpf. i was kinda dissapointed. but like you said all your out is a muffler cus you can still buy the silverline system. i would vote sawzall it off. i wanna eventually get a full system for my truck drop the cat along with the already gone dpf make her a little llouder. let me know how she sounds and what you end up going with.

Have you guys priced Silverline lately? Its definitely on the more expensive side.

i say cut it and leave the de resonator wich i think the 02 your dad has should have on it, but get rid of the cat.

saw is the best tool for the job and fastest support exhaust with jack stands to keep from binding on the blade

there is no resonator or cat. Just a muffler unless it is cali emissioned. What are your intentions though? Just sound? Performance? EGT's? If your only reason is for sound then chop the muffler.

my 02 has a muffler and deresenator and someone already stuck a chunk of pipe in where the cat used to be.

WTF is a deresonator?

A resonator is designed to quiet either the intake or exhaust with piping or tubing. A de-resonator would in theory make it louder since its no longer resonating the sound.

a resonator could more accurately be called a deresonator.

The resonator is to cancel out certain frequencies, or vibrations to create a desired sound. So it could be called a deresonator, for dampening specific frequencies.

cali emissioned truck if it had a cat. never ever seen an LB7 with a (de)resonator on it though and never looked into it that far for that matter

Thats not bad at all.. only problem is shipping. I can pick it up from my buddy on the way home.

Just sound I think. Better mileage will be nice, but I'm looking at a predator for it. I won't run it more than +65hp, so EGT's shouldn't be a problem.

if you have the money the 4" is worth it. not sure if you will see a lot of mpg increase with cutting out the muffler. you will get a very small bump in mpg with the 4" but nothing to write a book about. I think the duramax sounds awesome with a 4" turbo back compared to just a muffler delete. but to each his own

having owned both, stock exhaust straight piped and 4" pipe, i prefer the 4". Stock straight pipe sounds good, kinda raspy (not a bad thing), but the 4" is definately deeper. Sounds better in my opinion.
