Crank Pulley Came with 2 round 'shims?' pix

Gonna change out this Crank Pulley today, and check out the harmonic and familiarize myself with that job and do the easy half today.

Opened the box up and inside the center of the crank pulley were 2 round shim things.

Want to make sure I know what these are incase I don't see them come off the old.

:nono: Those are NOT shims! They are "keys" that fit into a notch in both the Crankshaft AND the pulley to keep it from slipping or turning on the Crankshaft when the engine is running! :cornut:

Thank you very much. Now you see why I'm doing this half now and the balancer another more prepared time when I'm familiar with this :)

Off I go now, with no worries.
 
The actual name for those is "woodruf keys". Just helped Guner0812 withthe pulley on his and the box said it had them in it but they wern't there and at least on his truck they wern't required to install just the pulley. The pulley bolts on with four 15mm headed bolts.

It was that post that inspired me to do this as mainly PM, and to split the cost of the Fluidampr install come summer.

Was surprised to see those keys. Thanks for that post with pictures btw.
 
No prob as this site has been a great find for me and I just wanted to contribute a little. BTW my transmisson came in yesterday and I will be installing it this weekend and yes I will be taking pictures and doing a write up on it and the planned mods. Trust me there is always a mod/improvement on my truck when something breaks.
 
Operation: Success!

The old pulley didn't look too bad, the rubber was starting to or has been dry-rotting so it couldn't have been doing its job as well as a fresh one, not to mention if it looses any of its balance over the years as that rubber dries.

Harmonic looked ok I guess from what I could see, I Imagine the rubber to be similar to removed crank pulley so I will replace that in the summer with Fluidampr one, and now I have a much better Idea of that job to come.

I did alot of housecleaning while I was in there with the upper shroud and fan/clutch out.

Lots of room to work in there to do the pulley's with those removed.

I also cut my turbo muffler tube/expansion chamber's tip off and re-installed it backwards with a hoseclamp and a little of that meat still on it so it physically can't get sucked into turbo. Someone else did this and it took 5 minutes w/hacksaw and now engine way less cluttered. Thank you for that idea.

Much more room to work and I noticed my 3/8th square spot on the tensioner that makes belts 100x easier to put on and off with that being able to be used. I think the snorkel tube gets in the way to use it, or I never noticed it was there with that tube on.

Hard to make out all the small dry-rot cracks in the picture.

It wasn't junk by anymeans, but they were there and common. Old Rubber is all.
 
Whether the old one could have survived a few more years or not, it's better to do it now - before it becomes a problem and leaves you stranded... or worse.:smile5:
 
To do the balancer itself from there, its just break free old balancer nut (impact??),

Then install a puller to pull the balancer,

Re-install balancer.

crank bolt to 200 lbs/ft ?

Any other tips / suggestions there?
 
Get you a real good harmonic balancer puller/installer. This is the one I have:

That's a good buy but even at $70 from Jegs you would wish you had bought it when you start tearing into it, especially when it comes to install time. The harmonic balancer is not one to be pushed on with the bolt; you would probably strip the threads out of the crankshaft or the bolt.
