Anyone know the low down on brake calipers?

Seems I need a set of rear calipers and after doing a little research I see there is an option for steel pistons.

Question is,....if the pistons are not steel then what are they?....Also is the steel piston a better choice then non steel and why?

Only thing that comes to mind is that the steel could rust and pit, causing it to hang up?.........Or is that reasoning wrong?

Thanks,

There are low-end rebuilt calipers with phenolic (plastic fiberglass-like junk) and steel pistons available IIRC.
