I hear from everyone that a late 04 and 05 cummins needs to left alone like an ugly hooker with stds.

What gives? What changed that much that it sucked that bad? got a buddy that is looking at a super nice 2005 QCLB cummins with the G56, and its real nice, just wanted others opinions before he signed his life away.

Thanks!

I have never heard anything bad about any of the cummins motors.

I had a buddy that had a 05 cummins and it was nice and loud.

well i talked to a service guy at dodge while my buddy was taking to the salesman, and he said that 05s have cat converters (easily gutted) and some had some early lemon injector issues, but otherwise are good. I guess some guys hate cats that much to badmout lat 04 and 05 cummins.

I'm gonna sic him on the dodge, cause my buddy currently has the 6.0 psd in a 07 Super duty, unemployed, but ex- army, so he gets 1000 a month, barely enough for rent and truck payment, so he is downgrading a tad (upgrading IMHO) :) so he can afford payments.

Good for him! He's making a definate improvement if he's had any trouble with the PSD. Make sure he hangs around here. We can use more Cummins guys.

he doesn't get on the computer much. the poor guy has been fed so much crap, I think he would start some thread fights.

He is under the impression that the 6.4L has been nothing but trouble, and the 6.0 is better. He also believes that cummins was started by ford, ford owns a majority stake right now, and real soon there will be cummins super dutys. And of course his uncle blew the heads off of an 01 Dura and an 03 Dura, so aluminum heads are shit, and they are a horrible design. (doesn't even factor in his uncle being a cowboy, no offense to cowboys, but there are some out there that can f*** up an anvil) I keep reminding him that the 6.7L ford has aluminum heads, to which he resonds the 6.7 program has been going for 3 years, so it is all figured out, to which i respond, if my facts are correct, the duramax program was started in 1998.

So lets just say we are good buddies, but boy do we cuss and discuss and agree to disagree concerning trucks quite often.

yeah, I figured you would say that! :D

At least he is just misinformed, not stupid, as he knows the cummins with manual is the best engine/tranny, and he knows the ol Ally is pretty awesome...even if she's an auto!

But yes, he is one of those ford guys that has that mentality that anything Ford produces is gold.

The only problems with the '05 trucks was they used and intercooler with plastic end tanks that can crack and leak. Now, under NORMAL conditions, it's not an issue. Under increased boost is where it shows up.

As for the injectors, that was an issue on the 06 trucks. Apparently there was a bad batch of injector bodies from Brazil that were prone to cracking. Bosch came up with an updated design and most of them were replaced.

The only other issue you see on the '05 is a tendency for the wiring harness from the alternator to chaff and ground out. The harness also has the injectors on the same circuit and when it happens the truck turns into a giant mosquito fogger. Easily remedied by re-routing that portion of the harness.

Otherwise, the '05 is one of the best years to have. Of the common rail trucks, it has the best fuel mileage and it was before they went to the CANBUS electronics so most of the system is easily serviceable.

My recommendation to most guys looking for used trucks is to get an '05
