I got my reg renewal in the mail today, and it says I need a SMOG check. Has anybody had to smog there diesel in California? I also have to voice how pleased I am about having to pay 500+ for fees also. It is still more than it was three years ago too!

Just set the chip back to stock to be safe. Seems you still have a factory exhaust? Man, that's a lot of money to check your vehicle to be environment friendly!

the 500+ is for the registration not the smog check.LOL! At least I hope not! I just spoke to a guy at my gym who is a "tech" at the GMC dealer by me. He says all they do is a "snap" test. Basically what this is, they matt the throttle. no smoke = pass, and smoke = fail. I guess I'm good. Just saw a local shop here with a hastily made, spray painted sign thats says "Diesel Smog Check here" 39.00.

I would go for that one. Lay it on it hard a few times before going in (if you have to have smog), because even a stock truck can smoke! Try to blow all of that buildup out before hand.

Yes, do a couple of hard runs before going in so everything's good and hot, plus it blows out the soot accumulation that looks like the grey-ish smoke when you get on it after driving miss daisy for a while.

5 bills for registration though? Jeez. Probably a stupid question, but is it ridiculously expensive because you have a personal property tax in CA? They just hiked it up in FL this year and I thought $160 was bad.

And for what!!!!!!!!! Our roads are jacked up everywhere in this state. Everytime I hook up the trailer and go for a trip, my cabinets are tossed onto floor. I drive like a grampa to boot, just pisses me off. for the past three years I have seen my registrations go up 15 bucks each year too. well with that said...
Smog for diesel is an old concept but the smog guys nowadays are infants for the diesel world.
Here is what they are told to look for.
Guages and guage probes-- they are told if you have guages that it is probably modified and has been flashed

Exhaust-- they are looking for catylitic converters (if equiped) you can have a larger Exhaust just make sure there is a converter (even if you hollow it out- they are not going into that much detail)

Non-compliant Cold air intakes

And make sure your trucks codes are cleared and the MIL (lamp itself) is in working order

If your mods are internal then just hope it doest smoke too much.

The snap test is just that. the smog guy does a WOT snap and checks to see if it is producing gobs of soot.

All in all it'll take the guy about 20 minutes.

The state is broke and they are trying to make some $$$$$$$$$ on DMV reg. I checked out my old tags and I am still paying more than I did 3 years ago! We need this economic slump to go away. It has kicked my butt for work. I am a heavy equipment mechanic, no work for almost 4 years! I am just fortunate that I have hussled up my own business, doing something else all together.

Yup, I think we need to take the bear off the flagg and replace it with an Ostrich with it's head burried in the sand!!! Tax Tax Tax and not look and the reasons for the Hemoraging of our finances. Lucky me- the state cancels the PTI plates for toyhauler trailers right when I buy mine. $650 bucks for a trailer registration!!! insane.

What is the deal with the PTI plates? Does it include all trailers, or just brand new ones? I hope it is not all trailers, I only have 4 of them. The largest being my 40' toyhauler.

I thought the PTI included all trailers too... but when I got the registration renewl on the toy hauler and saw that it went up again, I went through the roof and called the DMV hoping it was a mistake. I asked the DMV agent about the PTI plate beings that it is a trailer. her words " toy haulers are no longer considered a trailer that they are now lalssed as a motorcoach, and are not eligable for PTI plates" I was fumed and explained that my toy hauler cannot just get up and drive under its own power that it HAD to be towed--- that makes it a trailer!!! not a motorcoach. Well after arguing with the nice agent and getting nowhere, I gave the phone a nice beatting.
Just BS how this state can change things to meet their needs and bleed us dry. I am atthe point of registering all of my stuff in another (more affordable) state along with putting the reistered address on my CDL just incase I get pulled over by a caop. " Yes I know I have a California DL, but officer my address is from the trucks state... work says I have to have a CA DL and so I commute that distance"

How about an ostrich with its head up his arse?
The State unemployment & disability offices are closed on Fridays...OK, slowing the process to give away money, I can see that, but am directly hurt by it.
Closing the DMV offices the 1st,2nd,3rd fridays each month? STUPID!!! One of the only state offices that takes in MUCH more money than they spend...bad business. I went yesterday to register the truck, as the renewal hasn't arrived in the mail. 2 hours waiting for a 2 minute transaction. Last year, I did all our registrations online ro in the mail. I've had to go in 4 or 5 times in 2 month this year. To get an appointment, its backed up to May.

I'll not complain about the public transportation that costs us millions and is usually mostly empty of passengers.

I just got my reg for my toybox 450 bucks, no PTI plates. They hose us every way they can.

They do a snap test, OBD2 test, EGR check and catalyst check. You'll need to have all of that in place.

Yup, two sayings come to mind whe nrepresenting Commiefornia.

BOHICA- Bend over here it comes again

and

"California's idea of foreplay is "Honey,Brace yourself""

I find it really strange that new cars 5 years and newer are smog exempt. Not so for diesel trucks........ Revenue Generation at its best!

My wife was just commenting about that same subject. She asks me" I thought you didn't have to do a smog until 5 years old?" I told her I thought we didn't have to smog diesels, guess we were both wrong when it involves Califonia. With all this emissions crap and registration fees we will be to broke to buy any fuel or gas. Maybe that is just another way to help clean up the air?

Why don't all the productive tax-paying people of California just leave? Then they can have a the welfare people with no one to support them.

Thats whats happening now, California has taxed and regulated out the Business sector. Allowed all of these entitled welfare recipients into and stay in the state. Causing a flight of wealth to leave to cheaper pastures. Many of the people I work with are planning to flee the state in a year or two when their retirement plans mature.
For me personally, I cant leave. worked to hard for the killer job that I have, so I have to find every cheat'n steal'n way to ram the state. Leagally of course:D

I had to convert my lease to a purchase today. The dealer smogged my truck(passed) and my new DMV fees went down to 390 bucks! I was originally sent my renewal for 650 bucks. I guess going from a lease to a purchase readjusted the value of the truck, thank God! So, I am good to go. I was a little nervous about being able to get a new loan. I was thinking I might be losing my ride. Thankfully that was not the case. I can rest easy now. They smogged my truck while we were doing the loan docs. I was hoping to see what they were doing for the test.
