Oil pump change '01 6.0L 2500HD

Can the pan be dropped on a 2500HD 4wd without removing the front axle? I've heard of guys changing the oil pump without touching the pan, but the guy I'm considering to have the work done says if he does it, then he's dropping the pan. He estimates 4 hours or so. Does this seem about right for the job?
