In Arizona, buying another diesel Suburban
So I went to the Montreal International Car Show yest w a friend, and he was driving a '94 2wd Chev pickup. V6 w a NV3500. I have minimal to no knowledge about these trannys, and only hear the same old "they're junk". He explained that the '93 was the 1st year, and his '94 had a larger input bearing upgrade.

Anyhow, there's a junk '90 or so 1/2 ton short bed 4x4 in the local junkyard. shows 150k, no clue about the condition. Someone mentioned it was a Getrag, and the NV's started in '93(?).

The reason for me asking is 'cause I have a yen for a '64 El Camino, and if I can find a nicely patina'd '64 or '65, I would like to use a freshly rebuilt 6.2 diesel and put on a Banks or ATS turbo I have sitting around.

I looked at this '64 in Sacramento, but it was too rusty underneath, but there'll be more...

So my question is? What's the "best" one to use? The black 4x4 would need a 2wd output shaft, and I may buy whatever I need out west to escape the rust issues up here.

I know the BW's are used in S10's, and with the Camaro shifter, a hole isn't necessary in the middle of the bench seat. The S10 has the shifter at the back of the tranny, the Camaro has it immed behind the guts/gear part. But I don't know much more. I was overlistening to a fellow at a recent car show describing what it would take to install a Camaro or S10 BW 5 speed in a '55 Chevy. The demo tranny he was displaying had a Lokar shifter, made for the swap, I guess. He aslo told me that the Tremec was junk. He was an experienced rebuilder, but all are entitled to their opinion.

I'm not committed to anything yet, I passed on the red Elky, and the 6.2 is sleeping in the back of my '62 Rampside at a friend in Indiana. The turbo's are all here w me. I would also consider hiring someone to do this swap in their "spare time".

Why not just find a 2wd nv4500 if you have to buy a tranny?

A getrag isnt the worst tranny in the world especially in a truck as light as that that wont see heavy towing. NV 3500 would be OK but you will have too much torque and that tranny wasnt ever behind a 6.x

ok, here is how I thought the trannies went.

HM290: in the later 80s IIRC, was the predecessor to the 5LM60, thats all I know.

5LM60: what i have in my 91 chevy v-6. there are 1991 update toolkits on e-bay, so I am assuming they got an update for what I thought was the last year, 1991.

NV3500: I thought introduced in 1992, the same year as when the NV4500 was launched. I know the 4500 made 1992.

the NV3500 was supposed to be a little tougher, so I would think that a NV3500 would hold. the slave cylinder went internal in 1996, so if you are after clearance, a post 96 may be what you need.
