I have been driving diesels since 1979; mostly in Maryland. My first Suburban diesel was a 86 6.2L. Now have my 2nd diesel Suburban, a 99 K2500 6.5L. Both trucks were/are great although the 6.2 was more reliable. In spite of recurring injector pump, lift pump problems and battery cable problems, I luv the 99. Hoping that the IP problems have been solved with the installation of a Stanadyne aftermarket rebuild and a Heath remotely located FSD. These mods have only been on the truck for 1 year and about 10k miles.

I have 153k miles on my truck. My wife and I are retired and drive up and down the east coast. I want to minimize my chances of breakdowns so I try to do preventative maintenance .... meaning replacing parts when they get near their end of life; but before they fail. I think it saves me money in the long run because I can do some of the replacements myself when at home in my garage; but break downs on the road, especially after business hours is a whole other story; not to mention the safety hazards of being down on the side of the road.

I have been searching all over the internet trying to find out how long vacuum pumps usually last; but no joy. Same for alternators, wheel bearings etc. I would think that a forum such as this would be a good place to collect this kind of data and it could be put to good use by me and other folks like me. I don't know how to collect the data as forum user; but I wonder if the web site management might be interested in starting such a data base? I realize there would have to be some thought put into it to make it useful such as being able to separate failures by the type of driving ..... off road vs trailer towing vs cruising and warm, hot and cold driving conditions etc. But it sure would be a big help to owners like me that tend to keep a vehicle for many years and want to keep like new reliability.

Thanks for the welcome and the information. Now I need some help. I can't find the database. I've only looked in the 6.5 forum since that is my truck. Can you tell me where to find it.

JP, if you don't have any luck hunting for what you need, just drop a post in the 6.5 area and these guys will be all over it.

Thanks to all the welcomes and especially to the 3 guys that tried to help me find the database: Btfarm, Silveradoman and Ctchevy427. I've looked at the reference library that you directed me to; but it doesn't have the info that I am looking for.

I am really looking for a database file that deals only with failure rates of specific parts. Problem is, no one guy (unless he owns a fleet of trucks and keeps them for a long time) knows what the average failure rate is for a part. If you've been driving for a long time like I have (since 1949), you have a pretty good idea how long a set of brake pad or shoes should last, how long your fan belt might last and the same for batteries, tires, & shock aborbers. But now days when there are so many different people making the stuff, from Mexico to China, not all things are created equal and some things I have no experience with like how long does the vacuum pump on a 99 6.5L Suburban K2500 usually last?

If we had a way of collecting the data on failed parts from the members of the forum, after a while we could get enough samples of failures to begin to develop a feel for what to expect from our vehicles and different brands of parts. As far as I know, no one is collecting that kind of information and keeping it in a database accessible to the public. The OEMs might have it; but they wouldn't make it available to the public because that would be admitting that their products actually fail.

To collect a lot of that kind of data takes an organized approach with some computer software that collects the data and stores it so you can access it and find out things like what is the average expected life of a particular alternator on GM trucks or Batteries life by brands or tires etc. We can't do it as forum users; but the forum owner's might be able to make something like that happen on this site if enough people wanted it. I'm really not into tearing my truck apart to customize it other than to make it more comfortable or reliable; which is probably different from most of the users on the site. But then I'm probably different from most of the users on the site because I'm older and retired.

Thanks again for the offers to help; maybe I'll have to give up up on the database idea and take your advice to go on the 6.5 forum and ask specific questions about alternators and vacuum pumps which are my main concern right now.

Sorry that we do not have what your looking for. Looks like we have a VOLUNTEER for the project. Thanks JP!

We do have the BEST 6.2/6.5 forum on the internet today. That I do know. :rof: ;)
