A friend of mine has an '06 F-350 dually and is looking for a turbo upgrade. I'm not really up on my Ford turbos, so I thought I would ask around. He pulls a trailer and a gooseneck with the truck quite often but also drives it empty just as much. Is the turbo in the '06's a VVT? He brought up to me about swapping in an '03 turbo but I told him to hold off and I would ask some guys that would know. The truck just turned over 100k miles today, and he has had some pretty good luck with it. He's had 3 of the 8 injectors replaced but other then that, it's been good to him. I told him in the next 40-50k miles, he's going to need to replace the other injectors as well. Any help would be appreciated.

All the 6.0's are VVT. Tell him to take the truck out and drive it like he stole it for a day or so. This means a few "drop the hammer" acts from a stop light and see if he notices an improvement. I like to recommend to people that every 150 miles or so, "drop the hammer" from a stop light to completely flex and burn off any carbon on the vanes. Keeps the turbo healthy, and prevents the vanes from sticking, which can break the actuator.

Now back on his turbo upgrade idea. The 03's are my favorites. They feature more vanes than the 04 and up turbo's, so they can spool up faster and make more boost almost instantly. The negative? They whistle like crazy because of this.(customers complained about the high whistle and Ford had to make changes) If he likes the whistle of the 6.0 like I do, then go with that turbo. Its not a massive performance improvement, but you will notice an improvement.

If he is looking at a serious turbo upgrade, then have him check out the Phat Shaft from Industrial Injection, the Aurora 3000 from ATS and the Super B from, IIRC, BD diesel. The ATS turbo seems to hold the most water with people. Then II and last BD diesel.
