I just replaced the oil pump on a 05 LLY Duramax and I figured that I would do a write up of the process.

Removal of the oil pump:
1. Drain the oil
2. Remove the lower oil pan
3. Remove the upper oil pan
4. Remove the oil pan pickup
5. Remove the accessories and their brackets
6. Remove the thermostat housing crossover and water pump
7. Remove the crankshaft bolt and harmonic balancer
8. Remove engine front cover
9. Using an allen wrench, hold the secondary oil pump shaft, loosen the oil pump gear nut
10. Remove the oil pump gear
11. Remove crankshaft reluctor and oil pump drive gear
12. Using an allen wrench, remove oil pump bolts, then remove oil pump

Install of new oil pump:
1. Install new O-ring on oil pump
2. Install oil pump, torque bolts to 15 ft lbs
3. Install reluctor and oil pump drive gear
4. Install oil pump gear, torque the nut to 74 ft lbs
5. Install oil pickup
6. Use engine sealant on oil pan and install oil pan on to block
7. Replace engine front cover, use engine sealant
8. Install water pump and thermostat housing crossover
9. Install harmonic balancer, torque bolt to 260 ft lbs

Oh there was plenty of that done (during and after). Mainly cause it was after work, Dad and I were working and there was about 4-5 others watching and enjoying vitamin R

Is this all with the engine out of truck or from underneath or what?
