I just picked up a GMC 2500HD 1998 6.5TD It has a 5-6 in lift with 33in tires 143,000mi
estended cab no 3rd door.
As far as I know it is unmolested.
I bought it for work mostly also trailering my rock crawler

My question is related to my work, I install real estate posts it takes me apx 10 min per install,, Should I just let the truck idle for this length of time, I see people do this all the time just do not know why, or should I shut it down??

Thanks

any more it's kinda up in the air IMO. price of fuel vs the wear and tear on starters and other engine components.

Unless i needed to hear what i was doing or in the interest of keeping noise levels down for the neighbours or surrounding areas, i would just leave it running. Generally if i know i am gonna be longer than 10 mins. i will shut my truck off. Otherwise she stays running, i flip the high idle and cold advance solenoid on because it seems to idle much nicer that way. Most of the time i just use high idle though.

Better check with your municipality, some have a 5 minute idle ordinance and tickets are sometimes more than fuel or wear and tear.

Do you have more info on the High idel Flip and cold advance??
I know this more than likely a newbe question....
Thanks

The UPS guys have the engine off before the truck stops moving.

The bigger question is if you have the AC on out here while idling or just the windows down? AC on - idle it. Takes awhile to cool it down after shut down for AC.

Diesels hate to be stopped and started. It can be the difference between a full days work or stranded with a blown starter or blown battery. You know how a battery loves the heat out here for about 2 years before failing...

Make sure you upgrade the fan and fan clutch to a Duramax fan or 9 blade steel. (That 6 blade fan is junk.) Cleaning the radiators and removing the oil coolers to get the mat out is a must out here. Yours is likely plugged up with years of debris.

You could look at a lift pump upgrade and run the B99 biodiesel that Rev Biodiesel makes out here. Will give you a price break to make up for the idle fuel use. $3.69 / gal for B99 vs. the $3.80+ #2 prices.

The mat was cleaned before I got it, I just installed a New cooler and lines,
I will have to look at the Lift pump upgrade, How does it help when idle??
Also thanks for the fan info, I will have to look into that also.

Lift pump lasts about a year before they die. They help prime a new fuel filter, keep the PMD cool, easy starting, power, etc. Biodiesel eats the factory ones up. Walbro FB5 and the new 15 PSI units are a better choice for long life.

Only help at idle is being able to run the cheaper and locally produced bio fuel.
