Spare PMD got it started. Idled for 10 minutes then shut off abruptly. Same thing on restarts. Plugged in scanner and got three codes:

P0251 Inj Pump Fuel Metering Ctrl A Error

P0370 Timing Ref Hi Res Signal A Error

P0606 PCM Processor Fault

I cleared the codes and got it running. So far the codes have not returned. But not sure I risk the 2 hr drive home.

I had it idle for 20 minutes, then went to drive it home. It stalled right outside the yard and now has the Water In Fuel light on, plus still throwing the P0251 code. I was able to get it going and drove it back into the yard. Called it a day and drove the 2 hours home. We'll come back for it with a flatbed trailer next weekend.

Didn't you buy a PCM awhile back? Not a Heath or aftermarket

Yes I have a stock PCM for when I have to smog it every two years.

I'm thinking that the water in fuel is my main issue now. I had drained fuel from the boat to fill the Suburban. It took a little over 1/4 tank for this to show up. I need to order filters and pump some fuel out through that T-valve at the front of the engine.

Looks like the water separator is saving your butt... You may have future problems in the boat with fuel that is that wet or you just got a bad batch of fuel. You need to get the boat's fuel cleaned up ASAP before the bugs set in.

I had my boat diesel give it up. Compressor failed and pieces of it went through the turbo and then punched a leak in the aftercooler, so saltwater went into the engine. Typically the head will crack when that happens and they no longer make this 24 valve inline 6 cylinder head. If they did, it would be $30K to rebuild the engine. Volvo parts are ridiculously expensive. Turbo $3600. Compressor $4800. Engine rebuild kit $5,000. Cylinder head, not available. New outdrive $15K So I'm repowering with a pair of slightly used (360 hours and a year's left of warranty) Yamaha F200 fourstroke outboards with controls and gauges substantially less than the rebuild.

So I have 200 gallons of diesel in the tanks that needs to be cleaned out. I'm going to rig a pump and run it through the racor filter and into fuel jugs. Need to clear the diesel out of the boat tanks as they're being converted to gas (plug the return lines).

I think my current water problem can from the two fuel jugs I used. They had about 1/2" of diesel in them and I should have worked to clear that that out. I think that was my source of the water. When I siphoned the diesel from the boat, I used a clear line and the fuel was clean.

So absent a sure fire fix to the problem from the board members here, I looked at renting a trailer to haul the '99 Suburban back home. Could not find any within a reasonable distance. So my fall back was to increase my AAA coverage to included long distance towing. The prorated increase in cost was $62, but I have to wait 7 days before I can use it. I informed the boat yard that I will be coming to retrieve it the following weekend. I will make an attempt to clear water out of the fuel system and get it running reliably. If that fails, I call AAA and get it towed home.

If it's water in fuel clogging the fuel filter/water separator element, and by the description it is, then you need to drop the tank and remove the water. Replace fuel filter. Alternatively you could try and siphon just the water out and this includes some devices that adsorb water only pushed into the tank and then removed from the tank. Link. The boat yard or mechanic's shop may have these. You could (should) add an additional water separator pre-filter, but, it will clog and shut off the engine like it's supposed to with lots of water.

Best done from the comfort of your own garage.

The nice thing is that all the water in the fuel will have settled out by now and be sitting on the bottom of your tank if you decide to siphon it out.

I drove the Burb on a short 3 mile loop trip to Home Depot and back. It stalled 3x on the return. Coded P0251 and P0606 when doing so. I drained the rest of the fuel from the truck tank and FFM through the Mr. Funnel. Still had water in it. I will drop the tank and swab it out tomorrow, after returning from Ventura where I need to finish making a template off the curved transom on the boat to be used to built the transom bracket. Just need to keep things moving.
