Just got off the phone with Ashton (Wrecker). Ordered Engine Oil, Transmission Fluid, and Severe Gear for the Axles. Looks like I have some work to do this weekend!!!

Good for you Ed. :thumbsup: I find doing your own maintenance on your truck very gratifying. Plus you know it will be done the right way. Dealing with a great vendor also helps give you a boost knowing you have the materials to do the job correctly the first time. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Thanks. Having a lift and a nice shop to work in are a definite plus. I'm also going to rotate the tires, as the rears have 8/32 and the fronts have 14/32. Not sure why.... ):h
 
Holy Crap it showed up already! Looks like Sunday is moved up to tonight, lol. Gotta run to wal-mart and get a pump for the axles, though. Good Warm Up trip. :D
 
Whew, that felt like a Marathon session.

So, I started by unpacking and making sure I had everything.

I got the Victim, er, patient ready to be worked on by driving to New Ulm for a hand pump, and went through the car wash.

Drained the Engine oil and replaced that filter, as well as took a sample to be sent out for testing. I apologize for so few pics, but you know how it is to work with oily hands. I have to say that oil smelled nasty after 16k miles (was Amsoil).

Next moved to the trans. Pulled the drain plug, let that drain.

Next changed the Fleetguard filter I had on there, with about 5k on it. I got it at our local International dealer, and won't be going there again, lol. I got a Baldwin from the Freightliner( I think) dealer in Mankato, which he said they use on all the Allisons that come through, and I know Baldwin's are good filters. Cleaned the magnet, lubed the gasket, threw it on there.

So now I'm out of pics, except for the mess at the end, lol.

So, I managed to drain and fill both differentials, and got the transfer case full of Torque Guard from the sensor hole. Dropped the truck down, filled the engine and trans, and cleaned out the EaA air filter that's a year old. Time for a new one of those, that thing is dirty, lol. I also managed to run out of grease after 3 zerks, so I have to get more of that. I also have to rotate the tires and am going to check the TC and all fluids on Sunday.

So, when I went to pull out of the shop, the first thing I noticed was that, even with my foot on the brake like normal, the Amsoil has so much less friction that I had to hit the brakes about twice as hard to keep the truck still!! That's amazing. I also noticed that the shifts are sooooo much smoother now. You can't feel them, just hear them. That's amazing. I guarantee that I'll pick up 1-2 mpg minimum. FWIW, all the fluids except the Engine Oil were stock, at 69k miles.

My only complaint was the hand pump I got at wal-mart for $8 started leaking after 3 quarts of oil through. Had to hold it with a rag, was not fun. Definitely need a different system for that. Other than that everything went well, and is good to go for long time.

Ed, nice job. For replacing the fluids I went with the pump that Amsoil sells. I did all the fluid changes on the driveway and the pump sure made it easy to get the fluids back in.

The only thing I will add is that there has been discussions about the spin on filter. The claim is that the non Allison filters are not as good as an Allison filter. The problem is with the magnet covering the holes in the filter. I don't know what brands of filter this was with. Here is a link to some of the postings about it.

Hmm. I should've paid more attention to that. Ashton told me to get the pump at wal-mart, lol. Next time I have to do that I'll get the Amsoil pump. Live & learn, i guess.

Also, will Torque Guard be fine in my Bonneville transmission? Since I have 2 extra gallons. It does say Dex III compatible, but I just wanna be sure that it is ok to run.

Torque Drive will be fine in your Pontiac.
