A good friend of mine is an older fellow who wants better fuel mileage out of his 01 Cummins extended cab w/ auto trans. Right now he has a K&N drop in filter, straight piped exhaust and a Hypertech tuner on the shelf (no longer using it).

He has a budget of $1000.00 and wants better mileage only. Any ideas on how to spend his money? I tried to explain to him how much fuel he could buy with $1k, but it didn't work.

well he already has the DPF delete correect? That will add quite a bit. The stock intake on the cummins is quite restrictive like so many others so he can go with a cold air intake and use the K&N instead of one of the mock ups. The plenum (post intercooler) that feeds air into the engine is quite restrictive on its own. I'll recommend something like the CFM+, as its constructed out of composite materials instead of alloy to absorbing heat. Aftermarket exhuast to allow better breathing.

Thanks to EFI he can also pick and choose from a variety of tuner chips and programmers like Edge Juice and EFI Live. Enjoy.

Well, he already has a less restrictive filter and straight pipe, so he's good on that end.

The best mileage he's gonna get is gonna be by adding timing.

The 24V Cummins uses jerk-style injectors, so you don't have to worry about over timing them like you do on the electrically actuated CR injectors. They need pressure to pop, so you can crank the timing up as high as you want, they won't open until they have pressure.

Timing is what yields the best mileage gains. Injection pressure helps, but it can be damaging if you aren't careful. You wanna stay mild with the pressure on mostly stock truck.

Something like a Quadzilla Max Mileage (timing / pressure) or an Edge EZ or Mileage Max would probably be his best bet.

They run between $200 - $400 and they are only 30 - 60 Hp so they're not gonna kill his trans.

DPF's werent invented yet until the 07.5 model year, for all makes and model diesels. I dont even think 01's had cats on them unless it was a Cali truck.

EFI live isnt available for Cummins either. EFI is GM specific...So far anyways.

Its also been proven that K&N are pretty much the worst aftermarket intakes on the market. If you're not staying stock, S&B, Injen, AFE or Banks are pretty much the top of the line. Stock intakes flow so well these days anyways, some think its a waste of money, especially considering most dont even provide any power gain at all.

If he's interested in mileage, he needs a tune.

They did not start putting cats on dodges till 2003. My 2002 did not have one but, my buddies 2003 did. Of course my 2002 when I purchased it had a straight pipe exhaust. On my truck I put a 4" exhaust, afe intake kit and edge. I have no clue what my fuel economy was. It was way to fun to drive to even care.

I will agree with cumminalong, what is stated above by the cummins expert on this site.

Thanks a lot. I'll start looking at that stuff. He's only got a K&N drop in filter, I'll make sure he gets some Nanofiber action in there:thumbsup:.
