I have the factory fan and clutch. The clutch is working correctly. What if any fan and or clutch can I put in that is easy that will improve cooling for towing? I want it to be direct bolt up with just unbolt mine and bolt better one on. I am afeared to do the fan clutch mod, I am not good with fabbing. Thanks again.

A 9 blade steel fan off a 97? or98 6.5 would be a big improvement . They are cheap and plentiful at the junkyards and on car-part.com. Last I checked they were $20 at most places. Vans also used the same fan and clutch.

Orrum with your truck being a 91 he should be able to use the reverse rotation fan the 6.5 uses.

Go with Barry's suggestion.

However.

If it's a v-belt engine you cannot use the 6.5 fans as they are designed to be installed on the reverse rotation water pumps, which means the fan spins in the opposite direction on the 6.5 versus the v-belt 6.2s.

For the heck of it i set a 6.2 and 6.5 9 blade fan/clutch next to eachother. The hub on the 6.5 9 blade fan is larger, to the point where it doesn't fit the 6.2 waterpump.

The 6 blade fan will not use the same fan clutch as the 9 blade fan. 4 bolt vs. 6 bolt. So you will need a fan clutch off a 1998 model year for the 9 blade fan. Dealer wholesale price is less than $100 for the fan new if the JY doesn't have any. KD has it listed for $65 plus shipping. I would go with a new fan clutch Hayden #2839. Your parts counter can compare a 6.2 water pump and that Hayden fan clutch for you to double check fit.

Clutches loose 200 RPM per year and should be replaced after 5 years old.

Thanks War Wagon. Let me be sure I understand this......I can get a 9 blade fan at the junkyard from a 1998 truck. It will fit on a Hayden #2839 fan clutch. I will be able to change all this with just taking 4 bolts off and bolt back the same way? Will the Hayden start earlier than my stock clutch?

4 bolt vs 6 bolt? I'm guessing you mean the fan mounting to the clutch? My 9 blade fan clutch is a 4 bolt hub to the water pump, as is my 6 blade stocker, and my 6.2. The hub on my 6.2(v-belts) is smaller, to the bolt holes of the 6.5 fan do not line up with studs on the 6.2 v-belt water pump.

Orrum with a serp belt you should be able to run the 9 blade fan no problem.

Sorry but I am getting confused. Can I put a 9 blade fan on my stock fan clutch? Will a 98 fan clutch be better than mine and will it bolt on my water pump? My brain hurts....

Yes. Not 100% on what the 6.2's used but 6.5 6 blade fans have a weird 6 bolt mounting from the fan to the fan clutch. Thus you have to replace both the fan and clutch to get a 9 blade fan.

Sounds like there is a difference for V-belt to serp belt aside of rotation.

Does he need to double check the waterpump to fan clutch mounting?

FWIW: Hayden clutches come on slightly lower than OEM stock clutches. I can't find this info on their site anymore. So assume they are the same temp as OEM. The part number above is the heavy duty version aka will hold the fan on when weaker ones give up and start to slip at full lockup.

You have to use a 97 fan clutch on a 9 blade fan. The fan clutch you have now has a different fan mounting bolt pattern. I can get pics if that would help.

No I unstood that. So I want a 97 clutch and a 98 fan? Right? New fan clutch too expensive for my budget but will put info in my notebook for to do later. Thanks everybody I was hoping for a $20 dollar 9 blade fan swap.

Check on car-part.com or your local junkyards. You may get the fan and clutch for $20 or even less. Most junkyards wouldn't bother taking the fan clutch off.

You never know how old one from the junkyard might be. I've put used ones on and not had a problem, yet.

Don't mind me. My 6.5 engine went to the scrap metal pile with a bad fan clutch still bolted to it because of the bad fan clutch... I may be a little leaned toward a new fan clutch esp in my weather.

I sorta lean that way 2 WarWagon. I am going to go to the junkyard tho. I keep threatening to go, we have one nearby where its all trucks and u take ur tools and get what u want and bring it up front and pay. People tell me that most metal parts are a little more than scrap price and that a lot of plastic stuff is free. Sounds too good to be true to me. If I can get a 9 blade fan that will be a great start. Napa said the severe service 98 fan clutch was $176. For that I have to plan a little. Its way high on the list tho. Right now I have to get all these filters and Walbro from Leroy put on and the WVO system working. Serious horse camping and trailride season starts in Sept. and I want to go this year. Thats why I bought the truck and sold my 1985 Gmc 454 dually, it got 5 mpg towing, course like yall know it would pull the hinges off he!! but that aint no good when u have to leave it in the yard cause u cant afford the gas. What towing I have done with the 6.2 I get 15 mpg plus the wvo blend will be basically free. I am going to stay in the flatlands til I can get the condenser fins degunked or replace it and add a 9 blade fan and clutch.

I'm not by any means saying you are wrong. I don't pull long grades at full throttle either. You could end up with one from the junkyard that is only 6 months or a year old or is still working good enough. $170 for a new one seems rather high. I'd do some shopping before jumping on that price. Maybe we could get Leroy to become a Hayden dealer:idea::poke::poke::D
